How do you go about designing your quilts? Do you start out with a pattern and choose your fabrics, or start with fabrics and let them speak to you? It's been cold and snowy here, so...

I started out a couple of days ago, with some pieces of fabric from my stash, to try a pattern using some half-square triangles with my brand new "Square Me Up Ruler". I browsed around on this site for a little while and saw a few Carpenter's Stars that appealed to me, so I thought I'd give it a try. I started making the star with no paticular plan in mind, and just kind of went from there...

It's about 42 inches square now and I can't seem to decide what to do next, so maybe it will be a baby quilt, but I think I'd like to make it larger.

Suggestions?

Wow, you did a nice job, I love the border treatments you put on, looks really good!

I like that. I would just add a few borders and make a lapquilt. I really like that, I think I need to add this pattern to my list.

Wow, what a great quilt. I would make a lap quilt out of it, or maybe a wallhanging. It's gorgeous!

That's so pretty!!!
To answer your question, I usually find that my fabric starts me thinking before a design does.

Right now it would make a great table topper. Making it bigger would not be too hard, and you could have a nice throw size quilt. It you decide to go larger, maybe some red in the next row?

usually start with a class the fabric then never finish LOL

Wow, that is beautiful. If you want to make it larger, I would add 3 borders, starting with a med. inner border, a light middle border and a dark outer border that would frame it - it is a piece of art.

I design on graph paper after selecting a few fabrics and I may add an additional fabric or two along the way of the design process. Your work is fabulous and I hope you will post the final quilt.

I agree with a final border to make a lap quilt. You did a great job!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'm back at it this morning; will be adding a bit more to make it a good-sized lap quilt, and will post again when the top is done, hopefully later today. ;-)

I'm even actually using up a bit of my stash on this one!!!
