I finished my Critter OBW today. It's for my BFF and her DH for their mountain cabin. The original fabric is the outside and on the back. I put the extra hexes on the back, too.

It was fun, but I'll choose a fabric with a lot more colors next time. This was just grays, blacks and browns with some whites. a LOT of browns!! It took me a while to figure out that highlighting the whites in a curving streak around the center cubes was the way to use them.

I got a kick out of the legs sticking out on the bottom, at 1st it looked as though someone fell down.

Love the front and back!

irishrose 04-03-2011 01:20 PM

The quilt is perfect for a cabin. The legs sticking out from under are an interesting touch.

amma 04-03-2011 01:33 PM

I love it!! Awesome cubes, love the layout, the back is almost as pretty as the front! :D:D:D

Vickymomof6 04-03-2011 01:41 PM

Love those legs!!!!

Quilt is nice too :-)

JoanneS 04-03-2011 02:17 PM

It was windy, so DH held the bottom of the quilt while I took the picture! I like his legs, too!

Thanks for your nice comments.

Bubblegum0077 04-03-2011 02:19 PM

does OBW need a special template? Is it easy to assemble?

Great quilt, well done.

Susy 04-03-2011 02:42 PM

Love that one, it really flows nice with those colours. Cute legs, too, nice touch to the pic.

stunning quilt

4girlsmimi 04-03-2011 02:49 PM

Very pretty OBW! Looked at this fabric but was afraid it would be too blah, so left it on the shelf. After seeing your quilt, I wish I had went ahead and bought some of it. You did a wonderful job and thanks for sharing.

Who would have thought that the critter fabric would make such a dynamite OBW? Your quilt is gorgeous and I love the way you showcased the uncut fabric on the back.

earthwalker 04-03-2011 04:05 PM

Beautiful...Though you thought the colours were limited, I think it was a great choice...subtle and very cleverly put together. The back is really good too (the legs add an extra dimension!). Thanks for sharing with us.

You did a fabulous job on it :)

Maxine Rosenthal came up with One Block Wonder quilts. There are 3 books, and I used OBW Encore - which includes patterns for the cubes. She gives directions for stacking fabrics in 6 layers and cutting triangles. Instead of sewing the hexagons, you just sew HALVES of hexes and play with them on your design wall. When you're happy with the design, you sew them in rows. When you sew the rows together, the hexagons are comleted.

Clear as mud? That's why you need one of Maxine's books! There's a whole section of the Board devoted to OBWs.

I have one of her books. I was so intrigued by the dimensional patterns. Love your quilt! Very nice work!

coffeepot 04-03-2011 05:50 PM

That is just awesome. Do you have a close up of the fabric you used. I love how this looks. And DH's legs look good too. Did't want to leave him out. Marilyn

DH is really tickled by all the comments about his legs. It took me so long to set up my camera shot that he finally just sat down - he was holding the bottom of the quilt, because the wind was pretty brisk today.

trisha 04-03-2011 09:00 PM

I am usually no one to like browns but this quilt is just brilliant!!! Your color placement is just outstanding!!!!.

Katrine 04-03-2011 10:29 PM

That is a beautiful OBW Joanne - I absolutely love the colours, your design placement, the cubes and their colours and how you've arranged them. Oh and the back too!
Stunning!
Great theme for a cabin, they must be thrilled with it.
And a whistle for DH legs too!

JoanneS 04-03-2011 10:31 PM

If I'd known DH was going to get so much attention, I'd have asked him to polish his shoes ~ ~ ~

Jim 04-03-2011 10:42 PM

very nice OBW....very very nice

k3n 04-03-2011 11:39 PM

Joanne this is beautiful. I love how you got that white streak by placing those lighter hexes. It reminds me of the doggy one I made my friend a while ago - that was all shades of brown but up close it was such fun to spot the noses, tails etc... :-D

Yes beautiful quilt hope he's okay lol.

d.rickman 04-04-2011 12:54 AM

Be sure to tell him he has nice shaped legs! He is very supportive, to get down on the ground like that. LOL

Your quilt is really stunning, I love that the blocks are sporatically placed on the quilt, and your color choices are marvelous.

CoventryUK 04-04-2011 02:10 AM

Wendys Quilts 04-04-2011 02:49 AM

I am loving these OBW. I have done one a while back. After seeing all of these on the boards, I need to find my fabric that I already have a start another one!
I love yours....I love the legs too :)

Yooper32 04-04-2011 03:57 AM

Nice quilt, but my laugh for the morning was the best part. Not every quilt has not only feet, but shoes too.

chance 04-04-2011 04:14 AM

Love it! Question: How do you line up the pieced backing with the front so you can quilt it properly? Hope this isn't a stupid question.

lovedquilts 04-04-2011 04:19 AM

beautiful quilt and thanks for giving me a little chuckle. love that second pic.

Homespun 04-04-2011 04:32 AM
