I made 3 area rugs using strips of old fabrics that I crocheted
I am thinking I"d like to sell these now but not sure about prices..Really is an ideal way to use up a lot of fabric

craftybear 05-30-2010 11:59 AM

wow, love your rugs, did you crochet them from all types of fabrics????

Kathy N 05-30-2010 12:03 PM

I used to help my grandma make these. We would go to garage sales and find woolen items, slice them into strips and then she would crochet hers and I would braid and she would sew my braids into the oval pattern. What a walk down memory lane!!!!!!

Nice Rugs!

They are all done from 100% cottons left over from quilting projects

kygirl 05-30-2010 12:10 PM

Beautifully done rugs. You shouldn't have any problem selling these. Maybe look in Country Sampler magazine or online Country shops to get a pricing idea. I can just picture one of these rugs lying on a hardwood floor.

craftybear 05-30-2010 12:52 PM

wow, thanks Sue Fish for your information!

sewgull 05-30-2010 01:04 PM

These look just like the ones my mother and aunt (95 years old) use to crochet. They used scraps from projects, they were both sewers. Mama told me she learned to make the rugs from her mother and g-mother using old clothes. People recycled long before it was popular.
You did a beautiful job. What size hook did you use?
These rugs are heirlooms.
Thanks for sharing.

purplemem 05-30-2010 01:36 PM

How did you do this? Did you sew all the strips together, first? What size hook?

Give us a tute, please.

I used the info on About.com:crochet
How to crochet a basic oval shape and oval rag rug pattern

I'd put a link in here but I do not know how to do that

I would not sell these to strangers. Give them as Christmas or birthday presents to family members where they will be cherished for generations to come. These are really great looking rugs!

RedGarnet222 05-30-2010 03:15 PM

Hi Sue,
Another great finish to a project. Talented lady that you are... :~) Now lets see a purse made like this! It would be great for a summer bag with some cute wooden handles.

CarrieAnne 05-30-2010 03:32 PM

Nice rugs!

hcarpanini 05-30-2010 04:00 PM

What size strips did you use? I have a pattern and they call for 2 1/2 ". Is that what you used? I love them.

LeslieSkelly 05-30-2010 04:24 PM

Yes that is exactly the link I used to do mine....they are easy and really wear well..I hve done others also

Eagle Hawk 05-30-2010 05:09 PM

That is a LOT OF SCRAPS!! I am slowly working on one from scraps I don't think I will want to use later for something else, and the farther out you crochet, the faster a long scrap of fabric gets used, I found. But, they are so soft once they are done.

Yours are really nice. Love them

No I used 1/2" strips I don't like the ones done with very thick strips....just too bulky looking

I agree with you...I cut mine down to 1/2" , too, and they work better and go farther.

raksmum 05-30-2010 05:37 PM

Very nice! Will definitely bookmark this one. There always seems to be another project on this site to add to the "to do" list

buffy2 05-30-2010 06:35 PM

Love your rugs. Got the link bookmarked

booklady 05-30-2010 08:45 PM

Would this work with t-shirt material? start at the bottom of the shirt and cut in a long pattern around and around until you get to the armholes? Would the fabric work. Nice and soft I would think.

dkabasketlady 05-30-2010 08:54 PM

Great job on your rugs!!!

Your rugs are beautiful!

hcarpanini 05-31-2010 05:08 AM

One more question, did you cut your fabric on the bias like the pattern says? I have so many scraps in various size strips that I would like to use and it would be impossible to cut bias! I am all about using those scraps.

littlehud 05-31-2010 07:48 AM

Those are so pretty. I always wanted to try that.

No I did not cut them on the bias and it was just fine..they lay very flat and are just fine...really have no idea why you would have to use bias

hcarpanini 05-31-2010 03:11 PM

Thanks, I am getting ready to start. These will be great scrappy rugs for my dogs to lay on at the foot of the bed.

quiltedlamb07 05-31-2010 05:53 PM

those are very nice. thank you so much for sharing.

roselady 05-31-2010 10:41 PM

Any idea how much fabric it takes to make a rug?

annieshane 05-31-2010 11:13 PM

I think I just found out what to do with those soft knit fabric yardages I have had for such a long time. My doggies would love a nice large mat for their beds or hardwood floor in my office. Thanks for sharing the web-site. Will check it out.

Good luck with your sales.

I am not sure really...I did a more scrappy one that was about 6' in diameter and I know that took about 30 yds of fabrics

Those were REALLY popular in the 1950s They were usually croched from strips that were just torn. My Mom made one but she pressed and folded her strips so there were no ravelings. She made it like 3 or four years befor I was born (1954) It was always in front of the kitchen sink. It finealy wore out in 1980
