We were talking on another thread about wedding dresses and I mentioned that mine was hand crocheted and weighed a ton. People wanted to see it so here it is. Mind you this was 25 years ago.

Beautiful

bearisgray 11-22-2009 07:34 AM

It's pretty - and so are you - definitely one of a kind

Who made it for you?

kwhite 11-22-2009 07:42 AM

Well a GF made it for herself, and we were having dinner with them before my wedding. She asked if I had gone dress shopping yet. I hadn't. I laughed and said, "I don't need to, I will just wear your dress." She didn't laugh. She said sure you can wear my dress and she made me a new top totally diffrent from hers. I put in the sleeves and cuffs. She didn't sew.

amandasgramma 11-22-2009 07:46 AM

That is gorgeous!! You were a beautiful bride! And how nice of your GF!!!

Damkina 11-22-2009 08:05 AM

I love the dress! Did she say how long it had taken originally to crochet?

kwhite 11-22-2009 08:31 AM

It took her months. She was attached to it like it was an appendage. We worked together and she would sit in the lounge at lunch every day and work on it. I was in awww of it for a long time before her wedding. That is why I joked with her about wearing it. I didn't think for a second that she would let me wear it. But when she offered I didn't turn it down. I do however regret not at least ever trying on a single other wedding dress.

pocoellie 11-22-2009 08:49 AM

Absolutely gorgeous!!! You don't look like you've aged 25 years though.

Damkina 11-22-2009 08:50 AM

How lovely to have taken the time and such effort to make her own wedding dress.

I'd forgotten just how heavy crochet actually is when there's an amount of it, but Mum was having a sort out of the attic recently and brought down a multi-coloured blanket she had made for my bed from odds and ends when I was a child... that weighed a ton too. :)

I never tried on any other dress either as I saw the one I wanted in the first shop... that said, it is in a similar style of the one I 'really' wanted... the patchwork one from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers lol!

Katrine 11-22-2009 09:02 AM

Both you and the dress absolutely beautiful.

beachlady 11-22-2009 09:21 AM

OMG! That is beautiful. WOW! :D :D :D :D

Shemjo 11-22-2009 11:19 AM

Beautiful bride, and dress. How many other women have worn that dress? It looks to be heirloom quality and you are so lucky to have been privileged to wear it! I hope you are still friends!

kwhite 11-22-2009 11:46 AM

Thank you all so much for the complements. I REALLY appreciate it. I don't keep in contact with her any more unfortunatly. I moved from San Francisco to Pa and we have lost touch. Sad how the miles do that.

ScrapQuilter 11-22-2009 11:50 AM

Love the dress........... that too was a big undertaking.
Hope you are still friends with her......... she is a true friend.

Gorgeous!!! :D :D :D The dress and the bride!!!! :D :D :D

I am confused, she made one dress that the two of you shared? Just changing the top portion of it?

Evelynquilts 11-22-2009 02:50 PM

Yes the top was diffrent for the two of us. Her wedding was months before mine.

BellaBoo 11-22-2009 03:20 PM

Your dress is as pretty or more as the thousands of dollars wedding dresses I've seen. I bet everyone remembers that dress. How many wedding dresses gets remembered by anyone except the bride by the next day? It's truly a heirloom gown.

Maride 11-22-2009 04:02 PM

It is just beautiful.

Is funny, but also 25 years ago I graduated college (it doesn't seem that long) and my mother made me a crochetted dress for my graduation. It is so beautiful Istill keep it on display on a dressform at the landing of my stairs.

Janstar 11-22-2009 08:02 PM

Beautiful K! I just answered on the new thread and you already took care of the questions I had about it. I'm a little confused changing forums. Hope I'm not the only one!

tlrnhi 11-22-2009 08:57 PM

Absolutely beautiful!!!
I just love it!

kwhite 11-22-2009 09:05 PM

Actually as a result of this thread I have looked her up again and I found her. I friended her on Facebook and I am just waiting for her to accept. How exciting. I don't think I have talked to her in 20 years. Thanks everyone.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DRESS...and how special that you and your friend "shared" it and both added a special touch!! Do you still have it? Did you have a daughter that can wear it too" OH MY how lucky you are and you looked perfect :)

Margie

Janstar 11-23-2009 06:35 PM

Thanks Amma. I was wondering about that. Do we loose all of our previous comments? Is it as easy to send photos? I'm always a little nervous about change.

pal 11-23-2009 07:32 PM

What a special story.

I am so happy that you are getting in touch with your friend. It will

probably feel like you just talked to each other yesterday!

kwhite 11-23-2009 07:51 PM

Yes it probably will Pal. No I don't have it. Since I borrowed it from her she took it back. I have the top to mine and my daughter would not want to wear it anyway. It is not her style. Actually I love the idea of passing things like this down but I would feel awful if she felt obligated to wear it cause I saved it for so many years for her. She wore the gown home from the hospital that her dad wore home too. She can choose to put it on her kids or not. That will be her choice. Of course I hope she does use it but I will not be hurt if she doesn't. I made her Christening gown and I hope she uses it too but again it will be her choice.

sharon b 11-23-2009 08:09 PM

So have you heard back from your friend yet ?

fluffbug95 11-23-2009 08:49 PM

That is a gorgeous dress! It is absoutly stunning! :) You were a beautiful bride too! And that was so nice of your friend to do that for you! :)

Karen..do try to rekindle the friendship. When I went to my 50th class reunion, I met a friend with whom I went through grammar school and also high school.

In high school we were separated since she was a "B"..and I was a "Z" ........we had no classes together......but for the last seven years since our reunion, we have corresponded quite often and it is so wonderful to have found a long lost friend.

You won't regret the search.....MaryJane

mjsylvstr 11-24-2009 04:42 PM

It happened to me too..I wrote and mentioned to you that you should search your friend..I was a bit late but so glad to hear the the two of you are again chatting.......

I think that I will stop here and write my Ohio friend a note.....lololol
