So this is a few pics of what I've gotten done on the surprise for my Dad. I wanted to do a star pattern and bought a matching charm pack and jelly roll (Snow Bloom), but couldn't decide on a pattern. So I finally sat one day and doodled what I wanted. The colors are dark and manly but with a very traditional kind of country-ish look which is his style. He loves the Arts and Crafts decor style so I want to draw up a ginko leaf quilting pattern for the background area between the stars. Here's my sneak peek....
*ETA: The blocks aren't sewn together yet so the spaces in between are not due to bad sewing or anything---I just haven't decided if I want to attach them with small corner background blocks or one big 5" background block for a more obvious quilted design. Also a big thank you to Don (isewman) for my inspiration with his Augusta quilt! If ya haven't seen it I urge you to take a gander!! |
That's very pretty!
Your dad is going to love it when it's done |
I love your stars!!!!!!!! Your Dad is going to have a beautiful quilt!!!

I Love it!! What fabric collection is that ? I love them.
Your Dad is going to love his manly quilt. Wish my Dad were still around for me to make him a warm quilt.
Very masculine looking, he is going to love it!
Thanks guys! It's the Snow Bloom collection by Moda's Kansas Troubles. The colors came out a little wonky in the picture--kind of grainy. After I took a few pics, I rearranged my layout a little. Apparently I really liked a couple of pairings I made and repeated them without realizing, so I'm trying to maneuver the repeats into other spots. I've made 2 1/2 rows so far out of 6. But all the pieces are cut out and each block is in its own ziplock bag and labeled. So I think I should be done by December!!
ady thats going to be beautiful!! Your colors are fantastic!!! Daddy is going to love it!!! Make sure you keep us posted with lots and lots of pics!!

ady...you got the JB seal of approval too LOL. He was looking over my shoulder in the wee hours this morning and said..."Ohhhh hey, I like that!" Which means he must REALLY like it. Usually when I ask him what he thinks of mine...he'll say something like mhhhhmmm nice, or yep its a square. LOLOL I choose to believe it's because he's not into florals and country colors like I am
Oh my goodness!!! Mr JB himself?????? oh my well then it must be real purty!!! Oh tell him I said thank you please!!! By the way--how the heck are ya Lisa? I haven't seen ya on in a while. I think I keep missing you!
I'm good sweetie...thanks :) Yeah it seems like we keep missing each other by |----| that much huh? I think its summer's fault LOL.

And thanks for the kind words everyone!! I'm currently designing something for my Nana. I'll post that one soon too! |
I love it! The colors are so lush and natural, I'm sure he'll love curling up in it.

Yummy-that is going to be one gorgeous quilt! I think your dad is going to be thrilled when you give this to him!!! :-)
So I worked really hard all day yesterday and finished making the star points on all my blocks! Then when I went to do the corner squares i realized--I don't have enough background fabric!!!  I have enough for 99 2 1/2" squares not the 240 I need. Oh boy a trip to Joann's is imminent!
I bet he'll love it!
The pattern is really cool and the colors are gorgeous! I'm sure your dad will LOVE it!!
Gorgeous!
That is going to be one sharp quilt GREAT JOB
I love your star pattern. This is going to be an awesome quilt.
I've been working hard today and this is what i have so far. Three of my six rows are done. I'm thinking it's gonna need some crazy borders to bring it up to size though. I wanted to do a flying geese border anyway! Maybe some sashing between the blocks as well. Anyhoodles here's a new pic! My mom says I should contact some magazines about selling my pattern. i think I just might!
Really really love it!! Your are doing a fantastic job!!!
thanks melissa! just got row 3 done so only row 1 and 2 are left! whoot!
M-L, that is gorgeous!! Your dad is going to be so tickled. I love KTQ fabrics and I think they work great for masculine quilts because the colors are so rich and deep. Good luck marketing your star pattern-I think you have a winner there-it is really pretty.
