Dad's blue Carpenter's Star

When my dad moved into a condo after he sold his house, I realized he was still using the bedspread Mom bought 30 yrs before. It was close to disingrating so , of course, as a quilter, I offered him a quilt! aHEM! He has a KING sized bed. SIGH I have never made a king, even tho I have a long arm that will accommodate one. It took me about a yr and a half ...major long arm tension issues, a fall with ankle problems and no standing. Ankle better and solved the tension problems (bad stand alone winder!) , so it finally became the primary project. WHEW! Its finished and is happily settled onto its new bed! Dad loves it! Thanks for looking! (PS it is all HST. I believe they are 10 inches finshed.)

Love it. It's beautiful.

Great job on your labor of love. Did you take a pattern and adjust to fit, or was the pattern complete ? I have always wanted to make a Carpenter's Star quilt, but the patterns I looked at seemed too short for an adult's bed.

Gorgeous quilt, great colors! The quilting is exquisite, too. I am sure your Dad loves it.

Thinking of making the same quilt with different colors, but queen size. What size triangles did you use for the star?

Boston1954 07-11-2017 02:05 PM

I love it! The background is really a nice change from the usual white. It is nice he has a new quilt for his new condo, even if it took a while to make.

I measured the top of the bed, divided that by 8. I needed 8 blocks wide and 8 blocks tall to complete the square

This is the same quilt on the design wall. You can see how its made up of HST. The little white dots are pieces of paper to keep them in the right place! There are two of each color set, making it easy to put two large squares together and marking the diagonal, sew 1/4 on each side method. There are 4 dark blues and 4 med blues. The background is scrappy. I believe I squared up each block to make sure they were a true square. It was a pain to quilt, but it was square and flat.

The churn dash blocks are in the corners You can see them in the first picture at the bottom. I didn't have enough of the outer dark border, so I made the top a solid color. I intended it to be under the pillows, but until I make matching pillow cases, he will pull it over the top of them! (he is a stubborn as me!)

I measured the top of the bed and divided by 8. You will need to adjust your blocks either fit on the top of the bed (I just added borders for the drop on the side) or just over the edge. if you PM me when you are ready, I can help you figure out the square sizes.)

Kris, this was my first attempt at curved crosshatching. There are many wobbles...too many to take out! I purchased a ruler from Jamie Wallen. Not sure they would work for sit down, but you might want to look at his video. It made all the difference. I will also not do that small of a cross hatch any time soon! The 4 largest blocks took me about an hour a piece. Next time it will be alot less dense. Live and learn!
