I humbly submit my first "machine and me" quilt creation. My 20 year old Singer and I struggled a bit, but we got there in the end...most seams matched and it all held together after washing (Yay!).
These pictures were taken after only 1 wash in my toploader (with lots of stops for lint filter emptying). I was worried my wall mounted dryer might not take the weight so I laid it as flat as possible over 1 of my parallel washing lines...besides that the temp here is in the high 30's (celsius) so too hot to run dryers! The layers consist of denim with fleece in the middle and a flannel back. Very few new materials, except thread and the blue and spotted flannels. I don't think I could have achieved the cutting of seams without the Fiskars spring loaded snips my lovely husband got for me, nor managed to sew it together without the support of about 4 dining room chairs! I will still do my EPP...but I think the machine will be the way I will proceed on my quilting journey. After Christmas I am going to dust off my old Pinnock and get going with some more. So thanks everyone for inspiring me with pictures of all your beautiful creations, the helpful tips and making a lone quilter feel part of a community. Merry Christmas to all. Nice work.

You did a great job. I have denim quilts planned using my Dad's old overalls. This gives me ideas. As far as the drying, I always line dry my quilts when weather permits.

What is Pinnock? Way to go
I love that quilt. Looks so cozy.
Very nice! Is it heavy?
Thank you all so much for your kind words.
Jan a Pinnock is a brand of sewing machine. I think mine is probably late 1950's, they were made in Elizabeth, South Australia. Mine was purchased very cheaply at an auction, when I was around 20, I am now 46, so we've been together a while. It is quite a solid machine, looks almost commercial. I have the original manual, lots of accessories and though a little battered works well. The only thing is it is a bit cumbersome to set up on the dining room table, so I tend to use the Singer (very light). I so need to de-clutter my half of our computer/hobby room so I can set up a permanant sewing station...New Year's resolution perhaps! |
Susy, Yes, it is pretty heavy and very warm..I think next time I will make a smaller version.
Awesome Job.
Fantastic! Great job, earthwalker! Looks so cozy and warm!

Love the variations of colors. Looks great.
Beautiful - on both sides.
I wonder if because it's heavy it might be a good choice for the autism quilts? I'm sure that's not spelled right but I'm drawing a blank.

I made one for the Air Force boy while he was in Academy ... he told me that not only would he be able to survive any storm/blizzard, but there would be no chance that either he or the quilt would blow away! LOL |

Please explain the (EPP) to the layman or us newbies? Good questions! Best way to get involved in the Board <wave> |
WOO Hoo!!! :D:D:D Congratulations!!!!
I love it!!! You did a great job on it :D:D:D |
Beautiful work. I, too did a denim quilt for my first quilt. My son, (the recipient), says the same thing....can't turn over in the bed under it. Although my quilt is basically only one layer with small(4 inch) squares of cotton fabric sewn into it. I guess that I sorta got carried away with making it since it covers a queen/king size bed. But, my son absolutely loves that it is about the only one he needs on the bed during cold Iowa winters :D
Good job. It looks warm and cozy.
The first of many. Now that the ice is broken you'll just have to make more and more. Enjoy!

Great job. Merry Christmas to you. 30Celsius!! makes me really appreciate my Oklahoma snowdrifts.

I think they're wonderful quilts!! I love doing denim raggy quilts.. I'm saving up the kids jeans to make another one..
very nice..one for my to do list once i collect enough denim!
Very nice!
If the quilt is too warm for a Perth winter, feel free to send it to cold Canberra, I promise I would give it a good home
Great job! |
Really nice! My son is graduating this year and have just been looking at a lot of his clothing (shirts and jeans) that I've kept since he was a little guy to make him a quilt. Did find a pieced pattern that I liked, but not sure if it would withstand a college dorm. This looks like it would withstand anything that college life could fork out. Really cool!!!
love your denim quilt thanks for sharing!
Earthwalker, how lovely, what charm, just my kind of quilt! You did a great job, loved your story too with regard it's creation.
