Such a beautiful and unique idea...the majesty of cathedral windows with the common man's denim... you really pulled it off majestically....

Good Morning! I made this quilt for a family that has two small boys and another child on the way. I cut denim circles out of pants and then 5" squares out of novelty scraps for an I Spy like quilt. It is large enough for parents and kids to sit on outside. Heavy also. I really like the way the edges of the denim circles fringed when I snipped them. Of course the washing machine was a mess after I washed it. This quilt was fun to make.

made one for each of my 4 boys, they are really heavy but boys seem to really like them.

I can't believe I'm seeing this quilt now. I saw instructions for it awhile back. I had just bagged up 6-8 prs. of my husband's jeans. (lost him 5 yrs. ago but still had these jeans). I carried them around in the car for wks. to go to a thrift store til I saw this pattern. Brought them back into the house. Guess they just weren't ready to leave yet.
Seeing your quilt inspires me to go ahead with my plan to make this quilt. I had made a Ragtime quilt earlier but it was so heavy I ended up tossing it. Is yours very heavy?
Great job.

What a good idea! I can see teenagers really liking this quilt, too. The fraying looks great!

It came out awesome!

Neat quilt. Did you have to cut any of the denim after sewing together or just let the washing machine fray the edges? I can't imagine anyone from the age of 2 up not liking this quilt. I'm assuming that you did not use any sort of batting? Of course you know what the assume word does? Hugs

awesome quilt. I love denim

Just finished a denim rag quilt. Didn't think about doing it with cathedral windows. I caused myself a lot of extra work, but much less bother in the washing machine. I fringed all of the edges, rather than clipping them. They turned out very soft with no little pieces of thread. Don't think I'll do another one for quite some time.

Wonderful quilt!

Great quilt. I made my grandson an I spy several years ago. I used several of the same fabrics that you used. I make a game of looking at fabric in scrappy quilts to see If I have ever used any like it.

Wow! that is great! I have never seen on like that before. It reminds me of the old chenille bed spreads.

Very fun and I am going to start cutting squares. How far apart and deep where your snips of the circle edges. Maybe you can do a small sample tutorial for QB?

I agree.. a tutorial would be great because I'm just not understanding how this was done.. I've looked and looked and nope.. just not getting it.. lol

Love your quilt,

CookyIN 06-21-2013 03:48 AM

I'm not drawn to I Spy or Cathedral Window patterns... but absolutely LOVE this quilt. Love the way the denim fringed, love the neutral continuity of the denim texture and color, love the pops of color and pattern in the windows. Love, love, love it. Great job and such a clever idea!

CookyIN 06-21-2013 03:54 AM

Quick question. I understand using the square as your stitching line. But it looks to me like the fringed part of the circles that overlap the squares are also sewn down to the top of the square. Is that right? Or do the edges of the circles just hang freely?

key4unc 06-21-2013 03:56 AM

I love it. I bet your hands were tired and achy after snipping all that denim

sewmom 06-22-2013 07:11 AM

Thanks for the info on how you kept the seams straight. I am definitely trying it!

2blackcats 06-22-2013 08:16 AM

Great idea, just love it. Best picnic quilt I ever saw!

coastienest 06-22-2013 04:40 PM

What a great idea. The durability is an added bonus too.
