Denim Quilt Faux Cathedral Windows

2 Attachment(s)
Good Morning! I made this quilt for a family that has two small boys and another child on the way. I cut denim circles out of pants and then 5" squares out of novelty scraps for an I Spy like quilt. It is large enough for parents and kids to sit on outside. Heavy also. I really like the way the edges of the denim circles fringed when I snipped them. Of course the washing machine was a mess after I washed it. This quilt was fun to make.

Such a clever idea to make the windows I spy. The family will have so much fun with this quilt. I have lots of old jeans, this would be a fun project.

This is a very clever idea you are a very talented lady.

mary quilting 06-14-2013 07:31 AM

yours turned out great .I am making one now its a red white and blue. Did you put in the 4" squares of batting or leave it out I was thinking of leaving it out

sewmom 06-14-2013 08:00 AM

This is funny- I just saw this pattern on Inventivequilts.com. I tried to do it but sewing my circles together didn't work very well. How did you put it together so they would lie straight? Did you make a template so each circle was sewn in the same place?
I really love this idea and would be almost indestructible. You did a great job on this quilt!

What a great idea! If you don't mind sharing, how far away from the curved edges did you stitch them down, leaving room to snip?

Love it! Looks like it will give them joy for a very long time : )

Denim Quilt Faux Cathedral Windows information

Attached are the pictures of the templates I made in order to make this quilt. When I started sewing the circles together they came out wonky so I made a 4.5" square template and used that to trace the square in the denim circles. That was my stitching line and never a wonky circle again.. I used the cut out square as an I Spy template so I could see what will show through the cathedral window.

Hope this helps.

And also thank you for all the wonderful comments.

alikat110 06-14-2013 06:32 PM

I've been working on one, but using denim yardage acquired from a friend. It became a ufo....now, I want to dig it out and work on it!

Oops! I didn't have time to read the whole thread earlier. Now I see my question was already answered. Sorry about that. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

And thanks tucsonquilter for your wonderful instructions.

I'm not understanding how to do this. BUT I NEEEEED to know. Perfect picnic cloth for my daughter with her four foster children.

A great looking quilt. I love it.

texaspam 06-16-2013 03:20 AM

I love it. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing this. It would be pretty in any fabric, but your focus fabrics are just spectacular. Everyone will love it and want one. You might want to take the next rag quilt to the commercial Laundromat. It is easier on your machine!

beateannkeith 06-16-2013 05:49 AM

My two little grandsons would love this. I have the I SPY squares so I will need to go to Goodwill on 25 cent/Tuesday and purchase come more jeans. Thanks.

wolph33 06-16-2013 05:58 AM
