Denim Quilts

2 Attachment(s)
I got to thinking of all the denim quilts I've made over the years and I only have one of my own. I carry it in the van for this and that. Made it from my daughters jeans and backed it with a floral twill (heavier cotton) that I found at a garage sale. NO batting. It is plenty heavy as it is.

Join me in posting your denim quilts. I'd love to see them. :)

Edit: My SIL quilt this with a varigated thread, so pretty.

Never made one but it's somewhere on the bucket list.

Love your quilt! I've been working on making a quilt out of DH's jeans. Using his shirts to make couple pillow cases.

Here's one of mine that I really enjoyed making. The photo doesn't show the final black edging. The colors included maroon, sage and tan jeans along with the regular blue jeans. It's very heavy with a fleece backing, but very warm!

the quilting is nice on your quilt dakotamaid

Here's a D9P I made. My very first top! My sister had a ton of jeans in her closet. I'm so glad I made this quilt instead of sending the jeans to Salvation Army. One of these days I'm going to finish it and give it to one of her kids.

I have made several denim quilts. They are wonderful for keeping in the trunk of the car.

Probably won't get to do one. I worked with denim once for a friend and it just wasn't my cup of tea with the weight of the denim. What a great quilt for keeping in the car. Loved the use of the variegated thread.

lovely denim quilt

dakotamaid 05-24-2014 10:18 AM

Keep them coming! I love all that have been posted but the circle patriotic caught my eye. I still have boxes of cut up denim! My sister had 4 boys and they went thru jeans. Some I mended for them and later I got them given back and I cut out the good parts to put in my denim box. Someday. :)

BTW: I use my oldie but goodie singer for stitching denim. It has a much stronger motor to stitch thru all that weighty denim. I also use a denim needle and went thru several of them when making denim throws for my kids cars one year.

One of my 1st quilts I made down in Florida for a couple young boys, grandkids of my beau at the time. And yes, they are very heavy. No batting in these, just flannel on the back with various blue jeans and embroidery on the fronts. And yes, one is Cory and the other is Cody. Both loved hot rods too. Used decorative stitching on the machine for the quilting.

Beautiful mixing of colors! Much like the quilts by Alicia at http://lucysquilts.blogspot.com where in 2001, she and her sister adapted the pattern from "Jewel Squares Window Cover" in Kaffee Fassett's "Glorious Patchwork" book. Alicia and her sister used 1" wide strips of black Kona cotton to separate the denim pieces, stitching with a true 1/4" instead of the scant 1/4" seam. That way they avoided heavy seams by stitching two layers of denim together. The key is that 1" wide strip that lets the denim just touch, not double, and press to the black strip. She says "I am not sure who adapted the pattern for denim but it was inspired." It is surely one I want to make.

twinkie 05-26-2014 03:29 AM

They are very nice, b ut my experience with denim quilts is that they are very heavy. Otherwise they are beautiful.

So glad you shared your quilt. I am wanting to make a denim quilt and I am getting ready to start on it. It will be my first quilt. With a new sewing machine. I am new at sewing. So my skills are limited. My squares are about 5" kind of small. I think your quilt is very pretty.

terri bb 05-26-2014 06:49 AM

I made a couple like this one. They were easy and took minimal time but were much appreciated. Just denim and a heavier weight cotton, no batting .... great for picnics and to carry in the car.

Thanks for sharing all these great denim quilts. Some day..........

Cornerstone quilter 05-26-2014 09:56 PM

Great looking quilts...every one of them. It would be hard for me to choose which one I would like to make. I probably have enough saved jeans to make one of each. Started saving jeans when my baby brother asked me to make him a denim quilt for his king size bed (he was an adult). Didn't get it made. He passed away last May. Now I need to do something with all these jeans.

mom2pekes2 05-27-2014 08:15 PM

@Dakotamaid: Your quilt using the variegated thread is really neat! Thank you for starting this thread so we may see so many different styles of denim quilts. Like others, I have many jeans saved.

mom2pekes2 05-27-2014 08:17 PM

How fantastic is this!!! Great pattern for a denim quilt. Not only warm but also stylish!
