My 12year-old DGD was here today and I suggested we play in the sewing studio. She has her own sewing machine but hasn't showed much interest lately in sewing. I gave her a pack of charm squares and showed how we do the quickie HST's and the quickie 4-patch. She flew with it while I was working on her mother's quilt I am making. She did the whole thing herself.

Yeah, she said she had lots of fun creating the squares. She said, "Who knew this could be so much fun?" So it looks like I have to get more charm squares for her.

She sure puts me to shame...I haven't even done half the blocks that she did yet! It amazes me how clever these young children are! Awesome job, and I love the pillow

I was amazed too. That's the block where you sew 2 squares together around the edges and cut them apart. She thought it was cool how you can manipulate them into the different designs. Now she can't wait to do more. You just have to find the right thing to interest them. I had kinda given up. I got her that machine when she was 5. She did a few things but hasn't done anything for about 2 or 3 years. Now she is hooked.

Sadiemae 12-29-2010 04:08 PM

Very creative young lady. She definitely has a natural sense of color. The layout is wonderful. Look out another quilter is born.

Hey, look at how well those corners match! Great job. And I agree, pretty girl.

(You should print out these responses and give them to her. I think it will encourage her even more.)

See, we as adults are afraid to stretch our creativity sometimes. She had no idea that was something to fear. I didn't tell her anything but 1/4" seams and showed her how to cut the squares up. She had a ball laying out the designs. Her mother is a graphic artist and also paints in oil, so between that and what she inherited from me she should be one great artist in whatever she choses.

janiesews 12-30-2010 06:25 AM
