getting ready to quilt this for my daughter. I wish I had prewashed the fabric. I'm afraid now that the home spuns are going to shrink a lot and run . I decided if I do a poly batting that that may help . I was going to do a homespun backing but , the fabric keeps running red. I think muslin would be a smarter choice .
I won't be using that dust ruffle. I just put it on this bed to take a pic

Very pretty!!! I love the homespuns but havent made anything with them yet. I have a stack of them just waiting for me to decide what to do with them! :D

farscapegal 12-22-2008 07:17 AM

I have never used homespuns but Iwould assume they would shrink.

I wash all my fabric before I use it. I am allergic to the dyes and so washing helps.

I am wondering if the polyester batting would be a good idea. It won't shrink and the fabric will. Seems like that would really make it pucker.

make sure you throw in a couple of the fabric dye catchers in its first wash or two... Beautiful pattern and fabric color choices

Beautiful quilt!!!!!!

I love your quilt. Never have used homespuns, but I always wash all fabric and use color catchers when I think they will run - mostly reds, blacks or bright blues. Love that pattern.

No idea about the homespuns, but I have to say I really like your quilt, and the dust ruffle matches lovely to me :D

Mary, here is a link to Synthropol. It will save your quilt! I've used it in the past and cannot live without it. What it does is suspend the migrant dyes that bleed in the wash water and keeps them from redepositing on the lighter colored fabrics. Dharma Trading Co. is extremely reputable and has superb customer service. The small bottle would be perfect and will be at your door in a flash. I've ordered tons of stuff from them and always have it within a day or two.

note: I also have used their Professional Textile Detergent in place of Synthropol and it works just as well.

lovely quilt and i also like the dust ruffle
i have used homespun quite a bit in rag quilts. i haven't had any colors run and shrinkage was minimal if any.
good luck.

I don't think you will have a problem the dust ruffle matches by the way.
wonderful quilt

Thanks for all the compliments and help . I was happy to see the site that sells the Synthropol. I had heard about that product but had forgotten the name. I'll definetly get that when I need to wash it , right now I need to quilt it !

I would have used that dust ruffle, but my daughters bed doesn't need one .

Awesome quilt - perfect dustruffle with it. Guess you wouldn't consider buying your daughter a bigger bed so that she could use the dustruffle, right?

Wow, beautiful quilt, and very pretty pattern! :)

sandpat 12-23-2008 06:10 AM

That is just beautiful! I sure hope you don't have any problems with it shrinking and running. You just never know until you do it. Thats the bad part. I don't know about using the poly batting. I wish you good luck with it though, its way too pretty to have anything happen to it!

Bevanger 12-23-2008 06:13 AM

wow, very pretty

babeegirl 12-23-2008 06:30 AM

I love your french braid headboard. It needs a matching french braid quilt!

JoanneS 12-23-2008 09:19 PM

Absolutely gorgeous quilt! Don't obsess - if you use a cotton batt and it shrinks WITH the fabric, you'll have a wonderful antique look. If it doesn't shrink, you'll have what you originally expected! And the Synthrapol will save it from running. I swear by it!

Dodie 12-25-2008 05:13 PM

A very beatiful quilt but I would not use a poly batting I would go with cottonas that way they can shrink together I would use the fabric dye catchers and put washing instructions on the label to wash in cold water and dry in a cool dryer hope this is helpful to you I love the homespuns and have made 2 quilts with them

Mary L 12-26-2008 03:08 PM

Thank You for al the suggestions. I got some muslin for the backing , so as not to risk any more bleeding than I already have to deal with and I'll use all washing suggestions , given !

any suggestions on quilting this? I'm hoping to start today. I would have liked to have done it by hand , but I don't have time. If I did it by hand I would have done each of the individual diamonds , outlining the shape , and the solid diamonds would have a smaller diamond in the center. But I can't take that much time to do it . I'm not sure stitching in the ditch (cross hatch ) would look very good. I know I don't want a stipple all over effect.
I thought maybe doing the big diamond pattern , but that isn't enough . Any ideas ????

TIA
Mary L

Ditto about the poly batting, it will not stop the shrinking, it will make it look puffy. I'd go with a needled cotton on something like that, so the eye sees the beauty of your quilt.

As for quilting. You could stitch in the ditch around all of the little diamonds of the very most center, and then as you have the border going around that - stitch in the ditch on both sides of the border. Then measure the distance there, using a quilting foot offset out that distance with your diamonds getting bigger and bigger.

Once you have sewn all that you can stitch in the ditch on all of the the other "diamond borders" Which will tack you down and in, preventing any shifting.

It sounds like a lot of quilting, but it goes quite quickly.
