I was looking at the website of my local quilt guild last night and saw a quilt that was made with Dick and Jane fabric, which I thought was so cool. So off I went to eBay and found a fabric and theme I liked and bought it. Below is the pic. It brought back such good memories of learning to read with Dick and Jane in first grade with Mrs. Phillips.
I'm thinking I'll make a quilted wall hanging out of it to hang in our sewing room. We have nothing hanging on the walls in there in the way of "art", so I thought this would be cool to do. |
those are such sweet memories for me too. Sometimes it's the simple things that take us back. Reading opens up worlds. Awesome idea to pay tribute to it, Eddie.

That is utterly charming. I didn't learn to read with Dick and Jane (for some reason, my school had Tom, Betty and Susan), but the pictures are almost identical.

I grew up in Ohio and had Tom, Betty and Susan (and dog Flip!) also. I have warm fuzzy memories of first grade when I see this fabric...saying the Pledge of Allegiance, opening my lunch box, recess and the big, big slide, rain coats and galoshes. Eddie, it will make a charming wall decoration for your sewing room. |
Wow, Eddie. Talk about time warp! I remember Mrs. Jones...first grade....Spot..... I even had a faint memory of the smell of the old book. Let us see what you do with it.
I, too, learned to readwith Dick and Jane--I love them--very cool panel
Well, Eddie I also remember the first grade in Benton, Arkansas --- Mrs. Cates. We read Dick and Jane. See Dick run. See Jane run.
That fabric is sew cute! I used them when I taught first grade a lifetime ago! How fun!
Oh I love them!! I have a collection of Dick and Jane books. I taught my kids to read at age 3 with 1-2 of these books and that's all it took to get them started. I'll use them with my grandkids too!
I love the Brown Bear panels too.... I can't wait to see what you make. |
How cool is that fabric!!! My goodness... we had Dick and Jane (and Spot) here too!
That's put a huge grin on my face this morning, can't wait to see it made up! |
I too was taught by Dick and Jane :D :D :D That is one of the nicest Dick and Jane fabrics I have seen. Can't wait to see the quilt 8) 8) 8)

Awwww my name sake. I even had a dog named spot when i was growing up. My best friend was Scottie tho but lost him to brain cancer when I was 6. Think of him often. Such memories Eddy thanks.

What great memories!! I loved Dick and Jane, and Sally and Puff and Spot.....this is going to be a great wall hanging.
LOL I love the fabric but I hated Sally. I had a tough time learning to read and Sally was on the book I wanted to be reading but was unable to. Darn that Sally anyway!!!
i love this panel. i made a quilt for our dear friends son using this panel and he just loves it.
It was John and Janet for me in the UK, but still gives you the warm fuzzy feelings thinking back like that. I actually didn't mind school in the early years, it was the last few I hated.
Awwwww what a good idea. I think many of us grew up on Dick & Jane.
Love the panel. Had not seen that one. There are alot of us out here who grew up on dick & jane I see. Such fond memories. Can't wait to see your creation with it.
Perhaps W.Va. was a backward state. I entered first grade in 1940 and the books we used had been printed in 1930. Peter and Peggy were the main characters and of course Mother and Father, and later, Baby. They are worn from lots of use. I also used them to teach my children to read. Thanks for helping us to recollect our fond memories of the past. |
I think my class was one of the last to learn to read with Dick and Jane. I remember being so excited when I could read that I wanted to go to the kindergarten room to read to the "little kids"! Mrs. Webster actually let me!
Can't wait to see what you create! |
I'm another Dick and Jane alum! That was back when they were teaching phonics, and everyone I knew could read! Your panel will make a great wall hanging, and I think there's a law somewhere that you have to put something you made on the wall in your sewing room! Better get crackin'--those quilt police are everywhere, and you don't want to get caught violating a quilting law!
That is sooo cute! It will look great in your sewing room, so bright and cheery. and with touching memories to go with.
I bought this, too, but haven't made a quilt from it yet. I also bought several of the coordinating pieces. So cute. I learned to read from the Alice and Jerry books. I think that their little dog was named Jip. Anyone else remember these?
I love the Dick and Janes fabrics. Everytime I see any of the the fabric, I remember growing up with them. I have been tempted to get some of the fabric, but haven't yet.
That is so cute, I can't wait to see it finished. I have been thinking of buying one too but have no idea what I would make.
