DNP: Time Warp
2 Attachment(s)
This lap quilt is a Disappearing Nine-Patch (6 squares wide by 8 squares long).
In the fall of 2011, my aunt gave me 51 nine-patch quilt squares she found in her basement (dry, no smell, great condition). The fabric is likely from the 1930’s or ‘40’s. Some thoughts on the raw squares: • 51 is an odd number but not a prime number. A quilt 3 squares wide by 17 squares long would have used all the squares. I don’t know what you’d do with quilt that long and thin. • The center square of all 51 squares was orange polka-dot. I tried to connect the squares as constructed but I couldn’t make heads or tails of a pattern … • So, I found instructions and pictures to create a disappearing nine-patch from nine-patch squares. I sliced, diced, and reconstructed. Hence, what it is. • I was going to bind the quilt with the backing fabric but light blue binding wasn’t grabbing me. Brown binding! Ahh. Serenity. The working title of the quilt was “What Louise Found in Her Basement … “. I settled on “Time Warp” due to the elapsed time between someone starting the quilt and the quilt completed. Thanks for looking! |
That is so cool. I love the fact that you brought something lovely back to life.

Good save!
Just beautiful. Glad you were able to figure something out to use them.
Your quilt is beautiful, and more than that, it is interesting.
Very beautiful D9P. Great that it was made from family blocks!
Oh, you did great and the brown was perfect. You are one talented person. Great finish!
I think you did it! Great save to an old quilt.
Such a great modern technique and you got this wonderful traditional looking quilt from using it.
Great choice of pattern. Love the polka dots.
I just love the D9P pattern
Yep, gotta love those old feedsack fabrics... and the D9P shows them off very well. I like it a lot!
This is so charming! I love the look of the original feed sacks.

Pam My thought on the 51 blocks? She accidently made too many (something I've done) or something happened (perhaps to her?) & she didn't get any more done (54 would've made a quilt 6 by 9). Just a thought... |

WG Wells would be proud. You have successfully traveled through time. I love the final outcome. I fear if the orange polka dot squares had been left at full size they would have overwhelmed the quilt. As you constructed it, they add a nice touch.
Love that pattern. Love your colors.
A wonderful quilt and Time Warp a great name.
Some lady must be smiling down on you - unless Aunt Louise made them, then she can smile directly to you. |
Very nice and I love the fabrics!

Great job! I must say the fabrics in this quilt reminds me of a quilt my grandma made. It has PICNIC written all over it! Kudos!

It is a busy quilt, but the fabrics are fabulous and I like how you arranged them. You have made a treasure and your name for it is spot on -- TIME WARP.
I like how all those fabrics "play" together! :D
That is an awesome quilt. Thanks for sharing!
Your assemblage is WAY better than the original blocks. Very inspiring re-think of found patches.
What a great job on bringing a pile of blocks back to life in a new quilt. Love the scrappy look of it. Thanks for sharing.

Lucky you. You made a great quilt and I love all of the fabric.

Great job!!!

Kate, I've never been a fan of the disappearing 9-patch, but you did an excellent job with it. I love how the orange-white polka-dots, which could have over-dominated, now play a subtle, connecting role throughout the quilt. And I love how the whole quilt communicates 1930s. Really great. Thanks for showing me that D9P can actually make a good-looking quilt.

Beautiful quilt! Thanks!
