Do you remember my practice Blue Bargello?

WAY BACK in July of 2011 I posted a lap quilt top called My Practice Bargello. BTW: It's my own design. Part of my desire was that it be a little unpredictable, so if you look closely, you can see that it is not symmetrical.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...o-t138930.html

Last month I completed the quilting (SID - bored me to death, but I did it), bound it, washed it, and have been using it as an extra cover at night. It is warmer than our Waverly comforter!

It is called 'my practice bargello' because 1. it was my first bargello and 2. I couldn't find a purpose for the fabrics I used and figured I'd practice with them. Come to find out that every time I look at this small quilt, I can't help but say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I pick it up and hug it and twirl it around and then smooth it back onto the bed.

Anybody else ever do that?

Here it is as a finished project:

PS: It's too small to share at night, so hubby has to use the Waverly comforter until I can make a full sized quilt for this California King waterbed. :D

Love how that came out! Isn't it fun to play with designing as you go? Some of my favorites have been the ones I played by ear and watched what happened as I went along.

Wow, I see why you love it, that is beautiful.
Can you please tell me what pattern you used.

Homemother 02-21-2012 05:22 AM

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments! I made up my own pattern. I played and played and played around in Quilt Assistant with a design, printed it out, then decided what the width of the rows should be. The widest is 3" and the smallest is 1.5". Quilt Assistant is a free download. I think this is where I got it.

Beautiful job! My hat's off to all of you do bargellos!

JNCT14 02-22-2012 05:22 AM

I just bought a book on Bargello. It's next on my list (after the scrap quilt, the Drunkard's Path batik quilt, and the black and white for my DD's boyfriend...:( I am scared to death to try one even though I read the book about 10 times. Did you do a quilt as you go? Or did you piece the top? What kind of quilting did you do?

callen 02-22-2012 05:33 AM

What a beautiful quilt. I would love to try a bargello but they look so complicated. As a beginner, it looks very intimidating. Love yours. Tks for sharing.

You'll find that making a bargello is easier than it looks. I didn't use a book. I just read a few guidelines and then jumped in with both feet. I think if I read a book, a bargello would appear to be above my ability. Feeling my way through the process was less daunting than following instructions.

Being organized is the most crucial. But then it is with almost all quilts!

Piecing: I sewed the strips of fabric together, made a tube, and then cut the tube into strips to the size I wanted. I had to piece some of the strips because of the variance of the pattern. The piecing went quickly when it was necessary to do so.

As far as quilting: I did stitch in the ditch after assembling the quilt. I should have done the quilt as you go method. Would have saved a lot of thread and time.

Before sewing your quilt together, lay the whole pattern out, double check it, label the strips, and have someone else check the accuracy. Nothing like getting a quilt together and then find a couple strips switched! And make sure you keep track of which side is up on your quilt top. Put a pin in the corner or some bright thread to remind you of the orientation of your quilt. (Ask me how I know this should be done!!!)

The second bargello I made I used the quilt as you go method. It went together much faster.

Hope this helps! If you need any encouragement along the way, please feel free to ask!

What a gorgeous quilt! Great job. I thought I might be the only one who is so silly about my beaut. quilts that I hug & dance around with them. You did a great job.

I have a beaut. Stack & Whack quilt here on my bed in Ariz. & I find myself walking into the rm. just to look at the quilt.
