Wow, how come no one has told you that the darn button lowers the feed dogs...LOL.
|
It drops the feed dogs and Darns. Do you remember your Gramma darning socks on a lite bulb It sorta looked like she re weaved the cloth It's great for fixing small holes in jean pockets from the rivets
|
I think that moves the needle from right, center, and left positions?

Suzy To move the lever, which changes your stitich width and is leaning to the right in the picture, you press the button on the left hand side of the lever and slide it to the left. |
It could be for the feed dog but I wonder if it means straight stitch or zig zag? Interested in finding out.
|
Oh my goodness. Lucky you and it is so pretty.
Wish I found things like that at yard sales, etc. WOW thanks for sharing Vickey Stamps |

It looks very similar to my circa 1975 Wizard Citation, which was sold by Western Auto and made in Japan by Brother. Mine looks a bit newer, based on the additional stiches, or it may be an upgraded model. If it'll let me, I'll attach a picture of mine.

that is an interesting machine. First I've seen one like that. I like the looks of it.
. I was 32 before I ever had my first sewing machine, and it was a singer with its own cabinet that cost $30. That was in 1972. I was so thrilled. I sewed and sewed on it, then got a better one (or so I thought...a portable machine) and gave mine to a daughter that never used it. YIKES |

That one site with the manual is out of stock, just my luck!! BTW have you tried a squirt of oil, like WD40 on the edge of the knob, just a little. Very pretty machine. |
I think it means sewing centre, left or right
|
What a nice machine. Do you know the year of manuf. Looks like in great shape.
|
It is the feed dog drop. Darn drops the dogs. If they do not drop, it will probably take a service call to work it out. I know how to do it, BUT it can take time, patience and a little skill.
|
When you make a mistake or sew over your finger, you say "darn" and turn the knob. hehe
|
I'm kind of glad I read this thread.
When I free motion quilt, I drop the feed dogs, there's a button down by the feed dogs to do this, and then I turn the pressure on the pressure foot to 'darn' It's up by the thread, annd I never knew it had that setting until a month ago. (I've had the machine since 1989 or so) So, am I being redudndant? Does putting the dial on the darning symbol lower the feeds dogs, and I don't have to push the button down below? Oh, I have a Viking 630 |

Bottom knob is feeddog drop- (darn) up (norm)
White button in senter of longer fingered control in the center is the needle position Left, Middle, Right The long fingered silder knob is the stitch width The top knob is the stich length On many of these machines you have to reset the stitch width to 0 before making any other stich adjustments or it will not more or damage the intererior levers. Go to Yahoo group japanese sewing machine collectors- someone may have a manual |
I am almost certain that is how you lower the feed dogs.
|
Did you try contacting the brother company, they usually have good customer support online
|
In addition to what I listed before on the dials- to either side of the long finger knob for stitch width are two silver like buttons these most likely are to lock the stitch width in place once you set it. If you don't set it you should be able to play with the width while sewing creating your own designs.
In the center of the top button the white push button is reverse. This machine may or may not require the machine to be in motions to activate reverse. Have fun |
try it and see if the dogs go down. in the old days darn was for darning and norm is for regular stitching. at school they had one like that but we never learned darning/

It makes so much sense now |

Congrats on your new $3.00 machine!
You really hit the jackpot! |
Very nice machine
|
What a find!! I'm so happy
for you. Enjoy!! Hugs, Sharon |
I am so glad I read this thread!!! My Mother recently gave me this exact machine and she lost the manual many years ago. I have emailed Brother...lets hope they will do the same for me. A question for those of you that know about this stuff. How do you put the thing in reverse so that I can "lock" a stitch? Thank you in advance.
|
KristinaH the book says it is that little button on the top knob on the right in the center of the stitch length knob. You push in on it.

great deal!
|
just in case you do not know...the L M R lever is needle position. left, middle, right. quite a find.
|
When you turn the knob to darn, it's for FREE MOTION sewing.. On some machines when you turn the knob the feed dogs won't move, so watch that, or you may need to lower yours. Hope that helps.
Jean |
What a great find for you! And to be able to drop the feed dogs, too!!
|
Very cool, the machine reminds me of radio's and appliances from the 50's. Great Deal. Congrats. Sew happy :-)
|
If it doesnt sew normal, you say "darn you" and turn the knob to darn.
