Doing the yard sale thing Friday and open a case to see this. She wanted $3.00 for it and said it worked. Well, ok if it doesn't work hubby said he could play with taking it apart for $3.00. Well he does not get to take it apart!!! It sews a really nice straight stitch. Would like to know if anyone can help me understand the "Darn Knob" at the bottom? Would anyone have a manual or know anything about this. It is a Pacesetter XL700. I have googled and am not having any luck. Help appreciated!

Just wondering what the feed dogs do when you turn the knob to "darn". Do they drop down? Like what you would want them to do for free motion quilting?

erstan947 07-17-2011 01:44 PM

The darn knob is to drop the feed dogs....just a guess.

ljfox 07-17-2011 01:45 PM

does the darn knob affect the feed dogs? My thought is that perhaps it lowers them so that you can move the fabric and concentrate the stitches along where you are darning?

scowlkat 07-17-2011 01:45 PM

The Darn setting is for free motion. Love the machine. What a deal!

CoyoteQuilts 07-17-2011 01:47 PM

Pacesetter is a Brother machine.

Like everyone says, it's to raise and lower your feed dogs.

annthreecats 07-17-2011 02:16 PM

Lucky you to find a machine that runs for $3.00. I agree with the others, I bet the feed dogs drop when you turn the knob to darn. Have fun with your new acquisition.

TeddyB1967 07-17-2011 02:30 PM

You can pay $8.88 and download the manual from here

auntmag 07-17-2011 02:31 PM

My guess as well.

The knob is the feed dog control. Darn is when the feed dogs are down and Norm is for regular sewing.

mtspools 07-17-2011 02:34 PM

That is what the darn does --drops the feed dogs.

Jingle 07-17-2011 02:40 PM

Very pretty machine, looks to be in pristine condition. Lucky for you to find it.

eastermarie 07-17-2011 02:47 PM

What a find!

QultingaddictUK 07-17-2011 02:52 PM

What a super buy, I agree with the other ladies about the knob and you can order a replacement manual from here: http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp06763.html seems like a good buy to me.

tellabella 07-17-2011 03:15 PM

Very nice...

crewsemj 07-17-2011 03:23 PM

I guess I should have stated that I figured the knob was to drop the feed dogs but I can't get it to move. It won't pull, turn, push or anything. I would like to use it for free motion quilting if I could just figure this out.

That one site with the manual is out of stock, just my luck!!

alikat110 07-17-2011 03:31 PM

Great find

If the knob won't lower the feed dogs, it may need to have the timing adjusted. My vintage white did the same thing when I got it and I had to have it into the repair shop. He said the timing needed adjustment and now the knob works and the feeddogs drop...but, it cost me $70!!! So, for a $3 machine you may want to just use it for piecing and forget the FMQ.

I have just entered your model no XL700 at this site: http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp06763.html and it seems they have it in stock.

BTW have you tried a squirt of oil, like WD40 on the edge of the knob, just a little.

raedar63 07-17-2011 04:53 PM

Yep drops the dogs :)

PATTIESPEARL 07-17-2011 05:00 PM

turn the darn knob on(to the left) to lower the feed dogs.

ilovetosew 07-17-2011 05:20 PM

Good deal! You never know what you'll find at yard sales!

frugalfabrics 07-17-2011 05:24 PM

see if your hubby can oil it...that will work sometimes.

quiltjoey 07-17-2011 05:43 PM

Nice find even if for a back up...

KandiKane 07-18-2011 12:00 AM

What I can see it has a darning stitch and a reg stitch..

QultingaddictUK 07-18-2011 01:17 AM

Remember you don't have to drop the feed dogs to do FMQ, I rarely do and Leah Day never does: http://www.daystyledesigns.com/doiha...myfeeddogs.htm

mermaid 07-18-2011 03:27 AM

I wonder..have you tried pushing in the white center and then turning to 'darn? It just looks like maybe--I had an old machine once that worked that way.

I'm guessing the same thing. Have you looked online for a manual? Neat machine....

LindaR 07-18-2011 05:36 AM

I was wondering about the middle knob??? knob with arm, what does that do????

I had a Brother machine for years and that was how you regulated the stitch width.

MarieM 07-18-2011 06:47 AM

Oh, I thought the "darn" button was when you made a mistake, you could push it and the machine would fix it. LOL.

crewsemj 07-18-2011 06:51 AM

OK the wedding is over and now I can get back to you. Thank you all for trying to help, but I looked at it very close last night and noticed that when the machine is running the bobbin winder thingy goes around too! This made me get a bobbin to see if it would work. The peg that the bobbin goes on is all the way over to the wind position and won't go back. It's like it is locked in that position. Hubby was able to force it back but still could not turn the DARN knob. So told hubby he could go ahead and see what he can do. He needs a hobby (not just fishing) anyway. THANK YOU ALL for trying to help!!

Linda1 07-18-2011 07:03 AM

You found a great deal.

Minnisewta 07-18-2011 07:08 AM

When you make a mistake you turn the darn knob and it un sews your mistake? Just kidding.

joeyoz 07-18-2011 07:09 AM

I believe Pacesetters are made by Brother.

Sharoni 07-18-2011 07:29 AM

It sure is a pretty machine. Perhaps hubby will love fixing it so much he will start fixing everything for everybody! Then you will both be happy for only 3$ LOL

maurie 07-18-2011 07:41 AM

This knob drops the feed dog. You do not need the feed dog when darning as you control the movement of item being darned. This looks like a wonderful buy. ENJOY!
