Oh I'd hate to cut into it, but if you could do panels and pick up the colors in the borders. Oh, I don't know what I'd do. Good luck with whatever you decide.

smitty 03-19-2011 04:36 PM

BQ would be a great pattern for this. leaves the feature fabric in 12" squares. purple strips & BG fabric os something light from the fabric. striking fabric !

emsgranny 03-19-2011 04:46 PM

I would probably add just borders..But...

If you look at the first picture there is a visable line where you could make 4 strips without losing the design. Then put sashing that has the jewel tonesbetween each row and then the boarder. Want to see what you do!!

Pieceful Quilter 03-19-2011 04:58 PM

Make a really great top using the colors in the Egyptian fabric, maybe an ancient tile pattern, then use the Egyptian fabric for backing. Be sure to display and use the quilt where the backing will always be noticed.

Or send it to me. Ha ha.

meant2be 03-19-2011 04:58 PM

I wish I had your problem. That is one piece of beautiful fabric.

Stack and Whack

megs0863 03-19-2011 05:16 PM

Something wearable?

lue 03-19-2011 05:18 PM

WOW! I'd love to have that fabric! Where did your friend get it? I'd hate to cut it up but if you choose to, it might make a beautiful One Block Wonder. The colors are amazing! But be sure to save some of it to trim the quilt!! Lucky you!

Phyllis nm 03-19-2011 06:05 PM

i could not cut it! i would make a whole cloth and stitch around the large details.

Well whatever you decided to do with it, you absolutely have to show us!

tammy cosper 03-19-2011 06:30 PM

I think I would make a kaleido quilt and then back it with this fabric, so either side I was looking at something awesome.

I agree...it's just too beautiful to cut into.

Bergereink 03-19-2011 06:37 PM

Use it as the backing of a great Egyptian inspired top.

Don't cut it up! Build a quilt around it! I made a quilt for my nephew, my Hubster loved the fabric and didn't want me to cut it up...so I didn't! :) That fabric is BEE-UTIFUL!

Liz aka Helen 03-19-2011 06:39 PM

Who made the fabric I want to know, where can i get some too

kewlquilts 03-19-2011 06:39 PM

I used "Just Can't Cut It" for some fabric I couldn't cut up. I think its from All Washed Up. And I'm doing "Blooms" from Calico Printworks for some large print I can't bear to cut into pieces! Good luck, its really great fabric.

jitkaau 03-19-2011 06:44 PM

It's magnificent material. I'd be doing wide borders with some of it fussy cut as centre panels for the blocks within the quilt. I would try to keep the blocks in the decorative style of the Egyptian period as well. For example, radiating lotus paterns like the top of their columns in the hypostyle halls or actually have them looking like they were hieroglyphs on certain sections. You have a challenge - good luck with it.

tangledthread 03-19-2011 06:56 PM

Oh that is beautiful! I would make myself a blazer with it. What a great conversation piece.

Bubblegum0077 03-19-2011 07:02 PM

Wow, wht a print! You could eiher use it as a panel and work borders around it or use it for a backing. Either way, fabric is beautiful

nellie 03-19-2011 07:02 PM

i like your idea my friend and trust you can come up with a wonderful way of using it ,it sure is a beauitful fabric i,ve never seen anything like this before, can,t wait to see what you make out of this fabric

sheria 03-19-2011 07:04 PM

beautiful

Dee 03-19-2011 07:26 PM

I wouldn't cut up the beautiful fabric. I would just a border around and make it a whole quilt.

Momsmurf 03-19-2011 07:49 PM

Oh Dear! It really is too bad that there isn't a larger "blank space" between repeats where it could be easily cut.
As others have suggested, I also would isolate an area that would do well as a center panel. Then you could work around it building it outward with colors from the focus fabric. You would have a lot of fabric left to make more "panel" centers and even maybe some with fussy cut rectangles much as found in patterns using the rich Asian fabric.
You might want to check Kona Bay's web site for ideas.

Whatever you do, don't rush into it. Give it time to settle in.
How fortunate you are to have been given this beautiful fabric.

Will be eager to see what the final decision is.

Alondra 03-19-2011 08:11 PM

Wow! That is some gorgeous fabric, and I can understand your reluctance to cut into it. Am anxious to hear what you do with it.

I agree with this. I am sure it would be a beautiful pieced quilt, but I sure would hate to cut it up unless I had many more yards to use for the back.

auntiehenno 03-19-2011 09:17 PM

Make a wall hanging. Cut out a panel. It is beautful. Love it.

I had the same thought.

penski 03-19-2011 10:23 PM

i think using it as a backing would be great

snicktrain 03-19-2011 10:41 PM

How 'bout you sandwich it and just quilt around the objects in the print?? You wouldn't have to cut it and it would call attention to the objects. JMO

Looks like many of the pictures fall over onto other pictures.. I'd not be able to decide what to keep and what to give up.

cheryl rearick 03-20-2011 01:27 AM

I really like KarenM's idea, center panel and 4 corners... beautiful... place left over in back center? beautiful material. have fun

Dotsie 03-20-2011 02:04 AM

Don't cut........just quilt it I would suggest, it is so beautiful.

laalaaquilter 03-20-2011 03:51 AM

Since it repeats I would cut out one full block and piece that to another coordinating fabric for the back and use the rest for stack-n-whack or OBW for the front.

Marion Jean 03-20-2011 03:58 AM

I would probably just keep it forever and never cut it LOL I did buy a book called Just Can't Cut It - has some good ideas. This fabric is gorgeous!

Rettie V. Grama 03-20-2011 07:43 AM

You have so many distinctive figures and characters, there is no way you can cut it without loosing something. If it were me, I would choose an icon from the material, use the lavender shade so prominent and applique it over some of those spaces to enhance the ones around it. You didn't say how wide it is, but if is 45 inches, yes, I would cut it to be 54 inches long or if 36 cut it 45 inches long. Then make a beautiful brown border.

Please don't cut it into pieces. You will loose the intention of the designer. If applique is not your bag, Just quilt and quilt and quilt around design, until it is finished.

I bet you would get many raves over it.

Charming 03-20-2011 07:56 AM

I don't think this fabric should be cut, my heart won't even dare to do fussy cut because i would still lose something so IMHO i would us it for a thick border where you could see all the pics in it and just make up blocks in the middle. Also one embroidery block in the center would compliment the frame...just an idea

Good luck

Agreed - you might find additional Egyptian motif fabrics on sale or clearance on line - it was the "rage" a few years ago. The larger scale (to my eye) needs to remain intact, rather than get lost in a stack and whack pattern.

Perhaps a larger-scale quilt pattern, such as Yellow Brick Road would do well to feature it, along with several complementary fabrics. Actually, a batik with a reed or basket look to it would do nicely as one such fabric.

I myself have some smaller-scale Egyptian motif fabric with cats in Cleopatra headdresses. I'll be cutting it into 2" wide strips to frame this (machine embroidered) saying: "Egyptians worhsipped cats as gods. Cats have never forgotten this."

Wunder-Mar 03-20-2011 09:10 AM

Okay, I just posted, but I had another look and another thought. When you look at the first photo, your eye naturally picks out "rough" columns in the design. Why not cut the fabric into these three or so columns and leave them intact top-to-bottom, and create fill-in and side columns of simple patchwork blocks so as not to compete with the column fabric but complement it. Whatever colors you use in the fill-in and side columns' blocks will make the colors pop. Any leftover fabric could be cut into strips for binding or small blocks or block components throughout the quilt or as part of a partially pieced border.

Anyway, thanks for listening.
