The first quilts I made starting back in 1975 were of double knit. I made a sunbonnet sue for my oldest daughter who was 2 at the time and while working at Cameron University in the ROTC Dept I blew up a picture of the US on a chalk board and traced it on butcher paper. Made each state out of different knits I had made myself, my daughter, my sister and her daughters clothes from and hand appliqued them in center of king size quilt. The Map of US came out apx 4 feet across and 2 1/2 feet tall in center of cream colored polyester knit. I also made a twin size for my husband to take to fire station for his bed. He slept next to north wall and was using 3-4 blankets at time and still cold. After he got his knit quilt he took all other blankets off and said he was warm and toasty. One thing I liked about them was they were heavy enough did not need batting in middle, just knit top and bottom. Thanks for the pics. Brought back many memories. I am new to site and love reading every one's comments. Lived in OKla back then but now in NOrth central Arkansas. Been here going on 25 years now. Hi to everyone out there in quilt world.

Hey BW - beautiful colours and perfect points on the FGs! Is this like the stretchy, jersey fabric? To me, double knit is wool you knit with! (language barrier!)

this is that heavy polyester stuff that women wore suits and/or pants alone of. they were very popular in the 80's and early 90's, i think. they were very heavy. they were called double knits and where thick and rather stiff. did they not wear them in england or france?

These are great! You don't see very many of them, and yours have nice colors.

My grandma used to make double knit quilts. They are sooo heavy and last FOREVER. I have never tried to make one myself- they look like a lot of work.

I thought those fabrics were older, though- like from the 70s?

OK - if it's from the 70s it's probably what we call crimpolene - my mother used to make me groovy little trousers suits from it complete with brass buttons - boy did I look the bees knees!

it definitely could be the 70's. i've tried to put it out my mind. my mother loved them for their washability, and wore them until she died. they came in two weights, heavy and killer-heavy.
