Dr. Who"s Quilt!!

Are you a fan of the BBC series Dr. Who? He is a "Time Lord" that travels the universe, and uses a police box he calls a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimentions In Space) for his time machine. My daughter and I designed and made this TARDIS quilt for her future husband, who is an avid Dr. Who fan! We used ombre' solids to create the dimensional effect of the door, then I quilted wood-grain into the door panels. His reaction - "I'm totally geeking out right now!" In other words, he LOVES it!

Vistacruise 09-23-2013 05:47 AM

I'm geeking out, too!!! Very cool!

I am making one for my son for his birthday this weekend. I hope I can at least get the top done. How did you do the lettering on the window? I love this. Absolutely amazing!

Thanks 4boys! We used Google to find the images of both the header and the window and printed them off, then we enlarged or reduced to make it fit. We used fusible web to adhere the police box letters, and my daughter machine blanket-stitched around each letter. For the window, my daughter traced the words and embroidered with black DMC floss (backstitch and satin stitch).

Wow. Too cool! I am waiting for my friend that embroiders for a living to do the wording on my quilt. I am doing it all pieced but I tried using 3 hues of fabric to create a shadow effect but it isn't working so I got new fabric and am starting over. I am using all the same fabric but still piecing the windows to show the lines. I hope it works. I had a heck of a time finding fabric for it. This is the fabric I got to go around the Tardis. I hope it works!!!!!!!!!

IrishgalfromNJ 09-23-2013 07:50 AM

Your TARDIS quilt is wonderful. You both did a great job.

Marjoeal 09-23-2013 07:54 AM

Fantastic quilt! My son is one of those Dr. Who geeks, too. But I don't know that I have the nerve to try this with all that lettering. I love your work and design.

Thanks, Marjoeal! We found that all the lettering could fit on an 8-1/2" x 17" sheet, and even considered printing on fabric so we wouldn't have to embroider. My daughter spent about 10 hours on the embroidery. It was a labor of love, for sure!

The "wood-grain" quilting technique you used on the door is outstanding. I haven't seen that before, and it is so beautiful. Very well done. You should all be very proud of your work

Love it! My daughter is working on a Tardis quilt for her bff. I'm going to forward this to her. She'll love it.

Completely geeked!! I have watched the Dr. & companions since the 1970's but time is malleable. Dr. Who is a favorite all time Tv Show! This is a great quilt!!! If I make one I may have to have K-9 peeking out of the door.

QUILTNMO 09-23-2013 10:33 AM

OMG, my daughter saw a painting of the Tardis over the weekend and went bonkers. Someone on Etsy (?) makes a tea pot shaped like the Tardis. Can't afford it for my daughter's birthday next week... THIS is FANTASTIC.

QuiltnMyra 09-23-2013 04:09 PM

Thanks Myra! No, I quilted it on the longarm, which was a good thing, since it has a minky backing! I would have quilted it more, but my daughter wanted the loft, so we left big spaces unquilted... I cringe a little, but she loves it.

My husband and kids (all ADULTS) would go wild over your quilt. I have done the Tardis and the Dalek,,,,,,,but my favorite is the Weeping Angel. (not quilts, just hangings)

I did the angel because I liked it but then my daughter told me that she is EVIL........
I guess I should watch the show along with them !!!!!

NAHhhhhhh, I'll stick to the sewing and make them the wall hangings.........

gabeway 09-24-2013 04:51 AM
