Dragonfly Attempt
1 Attachment(s)
It would work better with the fold down fabric being thinner. I have pressed the roll backs down but I am going to sew them down and quilt it at the same time for a pot holder. I stay stitched the pieces on top before trying to assemble the block. I will give it another attempt at a later date for a wallhanging I think.

It's looking great! Looks like a lot of work!

Never having done this, I am no expert. But I like it with the width they are. Gives a great dimensional quality to it. Please share when finished.
Thanks Tartan for posting that! I do like the look of it. I know you said potholder - how big is the block? I did order the pattern yesterday - I'm thinking wallhanging but 'bigger' blocks.
Thank you for posting I LOVE the colors! I ordered the pattern yesterday too, and can't wait to get it.... I am excited to try it. What size is that block you made? Was it fairly easy?
Looking good!! Please do show pics of your progress! :)

Beautiful!!! Wonderful job!!!
That's a pretty cool and creative dragonfly!
I have never seen this before, I love it. Thank you for sharing.

It looks like a dragonfly... nice

I have never seen this before, I love it. Thank you for sharing. May I ask what the pattern is called. Tried to find it online to order and was not successful. Thanks.

That is really neat. I like the effect.

It looks like a Dragonfly , what a great job !

My block finished at 8 and 1/2 inches as it is now. My pieces were
2-4 1/2 inch cream square, 6-2 1/2 inch squares, (1-3 1/2 inch square, 2-3 1/2 inch rectangles) trim this section to 4 1/2 after assembling the head section 1-4 1/2 inch batik square, 4-2 1/2 X 4 1/2 inch batik rectangles, 2-2 1/2 inch batik squares, 1-1 1/2 inch batik square(head) I believe these are the pieces but I trimmed the head section after assembling that section to fit. I thought it would be hard but it came together well. I wouldn't attempt sewing the sections together though without stay stitching the fold back pieces on first. I think 3 of this size blocks stacked perpendicular will make a pretty spring wallhanging. I really like the quilt pattern too and now that I see how it works, I will order the pattern to add to my " to do" list of quilts. For those interested...the pattern name is Dance of the Dragonflies and it can be found at http://www.southwindquilts.com/shop/...sku-SWD321.htm I don't know if the link will work as I am computer challenged. |
It looks great, will make a nice wall hanging. I did their Mexican Stars pattern and really like the way it turned out.
Tartan, I love it you did a great job. I have this pattern and am a bit intimidated by it. Maybe next year I will give it a go:-)
you did a great job

I love dragon flies and your pot holder is beautiful.
Coming along nicely.

Too pretty to use as a pot holder. I really like this and may have to play with this to get another look. I think a block made with two of the tail pieces and the other two with the opening larger would make a nice lap quilt. I'll go buy the pattern and see if I can work that out.
Nice! I've never seen that either
Tartan did you starch before you began as it looks stiff. I would wash fabric first and the try. I love twiddling and fiddling and it is much easier if the fabric will roll. I starch when it is done, I have also started using elmers glue to hold done before sewing. They do go flatter this way.
Love the pattern must find one. |
Is this technique based on 10 minute and 5 minute block? Can't remember author of books......what is size of the block.
Your work looks wonderful. Did you starch the roll downs? I'm wondering what would happen when you wash it if you don't stitch them down.
very pretty
Dragonfly
I think that is georgeous ! Where could I find the pattern?

Nice!! Can't wait to see more pictures
very unique, and pretty
Pretty. I have made a couple of these dragon flies and a turtle w/ this technique. It is a fun and relatively easy technique once you get the hang of it.

Just realized how old this thread is.

A clever variation of Cathedral Window Tartan.
