Since we've been chatting about posting some Works-In-Progress, rather than just finished quilts, I decided to post my first contribution to the effort.

I've started working on a Dresden Plate/Aster quilt. For the large queensize quilt I'm planning, it's going to take somewhere in the neighborhood of 1200 pieces or so total (the most I've attempted in a quilt to-date).

I think I'll use 64 "plates" with 16 wedges in each, but will decide for sure after I have that many blocks done and can start messing around with placement. Each plate/block will be made up of a combination of 4 fabrics, and I am making sets of 4 matching blocks. I haven't chosen the fabric for the plate centers yet. I have some off-white fabric on order that will probably be the "background", and I will try a machine-applique test block to decide whether I like it well enough, or whether I'll need to slipstich the blocks to the background by hand. I haven't decided what to do with borders yet either.

I first saw the tutorial and template on the Missouri Star Quilt Co. site here: http://www.youtube.com/v/lcy_p4pryE4?autoplay=1

The template I used is this one from Marti Michell: http://www.frommarti.com/dresden.shtml
I bought it at our LQS.

I don't expect to finish this quilt any time soon, but I'll keep y'all updated with my progress from time to time.

Enjoy...

First, there's lots of cutting...

Then a bit of sewing...

Then each wedge needs to be trimmed, turned and pressed

and here are a few completed plates on the design wall (still need center fabric)

And here's the block I used for the demo pics this afternoon

Wedges for 4 blocks; I sew them in a continuous "string", then cut apart.

Question about your template....what make is it. your plates have 16 blades, the one I have I have to make 20. I would much rather have onle 16 per plate. I cant see in your picture.

It will be absolutely gorgeous when its finished. I love the colors. I hope to do one this year. I made Aster in the 80s, Oldest DDs dog chewed it up. I will keep this one.

Missouri Quilt Company has a tutorial on their web site on how to make a Dresden Plate.

Dresden plate pattern is one of my favorites. I made a lot of Dresden plate table toppers from Christmas materials. Yours are really pretty.

Very stunning, wonderful choices with the colors!

QuiltingHiker 01-09-2011 05:52 PM

Wow aren't you organized. The Marti Mitchel template is the same one I used for my wallhanging. I love her templates.

Your D-plates are beautiful. It is going to be a beautiful quilt.

WisconsinCheryl 01-09-2011 07:17 PM

Wow, you make this look so easy but it also looks like 'organization' is the best way to make the dresdens turn out so nice. I have wanted to try a dresden but not sure I am ready for it. Do you find these as an intermediate or advanced quilt?

tutty 01-09-2011 07:54 PM

this is going to be a absolute Beauty !

annieshane 01-09-2011 08:01 PM

Oh, I do love these fabrics. This is going to be a stunning quilt. Love the chain piecing. That is my way to go. My problem is that I want to complete one block at the time. Thanks for emphasing the chain piecing, will certainly prompt me to do that technique.

Ginger 01-09-2011 08:08 PM

I want to do a Dresden plate. They look so wonderful.

Even if you do one block at a time, you can utilize chain piecing; you'll just start with 16 pieces for each block.

littlehud 01-09-2011 09:09 PM

That is going to be a great quilt. Thanks.

rosemaynes 01-10-2011 07:33 AM

I am working on one at this moment. I did not take a picture yet of in progress but will take on on the design wall soon. I am in process of putting them on the back ground piece of kona cotton. It has become a real chalenge. All the help from the board and tuttorials have been great.

IBQUILTIN 01-14-2011 05:29 PM

I love the dresden plate, and your little tute makes it a lot clearer for me. Thanx for posting

You're a bit ahead of me... any sage advice?

I'm still looking for the perfect background fabric and maybe a single fabric for the centers. I'm thinking about an off-white blender or a very smal cream on cream print for the background.

Edit: Hey sewingsuz, I see you're practically next door, in Cottonwood!

Pat P 01-14-2011 06:22 PM

Wow! you made it look so easy!!

sewnsewer2 01-14-2011 06:23 PM
