Here is an example of a wall hanging using some of my great aunts hankerchiefs. She passed away in 2001 and had lived with my grandmother for 30 some odd years. She was more like a daughter to my grandmother than a sister. Here is my grandma holding the wall hanging.

That is the coolest thing :!: I LOVE it! I have a bunch of my Granny's hankies that I would like to do for my mom. I have seen where they cut them and do a crazy style-mom was not to sure about that-I think this will be the solution. Hope you don't mind if I "steal" your idea someday. :D

You are off to a good start Henry, and what a good way to save the keepsakes we hold so dear..........good job :D

henryparrish76 12-27-2007 11:32 AM

I do not mind at all :) I liked this because I didn't have to cut up the hankies or anything. I could just sew them as they were.

henryparrish76 12-27-2007 11:34 AM

Thank you Ruth!

Very clever! I collect old hankies. They were so pretty. You did a wonderful job preserving them. Welcome to the quilting world!

Karenmay 12-27-2007 11:57 AM

Brilliant idea Henry...Ive got a drawer full of them but no-one ever uses them any more. My Mum would never let us out of the door without a clean hankie!!

Karen

Chele thank you so much. I have more of them somewhere in the clutter that is my home. I plan on making another one.

What a trip! I brought my late Gramma's hankies to work today to sort through and decide how to layout a quilt with them! And here you have posted your own hankie creation!

I think I will need to frame mine since there are about 30 and they are all different sizes. Some need to be soaked in OxyClean too. Looks like scorch marks on a few.

So nice to have another creative male in our group! Keep up the good work, and keep posting pics!

What a great way to display such a precious collection!! I've used those to make pillow cases, the hankie as the skirt of a lady's dress, but I always felt awful for cutting them up. Your way is sooo much better!

Diamonds 12-27-2007 12:41 PM

I think it is very pretty... I would display it too...

henryparrish76 12-27-2007 12:42 PM

A couple of the hankies were from the 40's and I just didn't want to cut them so I though why cut them up when I can just sew them together. :)

henryparrish76 12-27-2007 12:42 PM

My grandmother is trying to decide if she should hang it as it is or put it in a frame to hang it up.

barnbum 12-27-2007 02:54 PM

Celeste,

Thank you and it was nice to be creative and make this for my grandmother. She told me today that she had it framed and it is now on her living room wall at home.
