I have just returned from the 2011 Wal Mart Shareholders Meeting in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I went as a guest of Wal Mart for 4 days and represented my store from Oneonta, Alabama. While in the meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, they were discussing some changes that were taking place in Wal Mart. As I used a walker on wheels due to my problem with walking long distances, I was placed on the ground floor of the meeting in the 8th row just down from the stage. Mr. John Aden was speaking about the fact that they were bringing back firearms to the stores. Then he said, "And, continuing with words that begin with "F", Fabric is Back". Well, without thinking, I shouted "Praise the LORD". Didn't realize my voice carried and then John said, "Did I hear a Praise the LORD"? Anyway, he said it would be full fabric that would be cut by an associate. He also said that they listened to the customers and that fabric would return to 700 stores by September. He then said that if your store had fabric, you would not lose it. I am enclosing a picture that was taken as he was speaking from the stage of this years meeting. WHOOOHOO!!!

Well I'll believe it when I see it and I can't wait till September to see it lol. Right now I drive 300 miles when I need something I've only seen at Walmart lol, although I have noticed Joann's and Hancocks carrying some of the same fabric for twice the price???????

Chele 06-05-2011 10:21 AM

That's so cute him hearing you! I think you spoke for many quilters. Quilting is gaining momentum worldwide. Walmart would be silly to abandon fabric sales all together.

soccertxi 06-05-2011 10:33 AM

I hope one of my stores is among the 300..even with quilt shops, I would look at WalMart 1st. Especially for backings.

normasews 06-05-2011 10:48 AM

Wow! That's great news. I have no problem with Walmart fabric.

skydiver70 06-05-2011 10:53 AM

Thank you! Another praise the Lord!

One of ours still has some but not great fabric. One of our new ones doesn't have it at all. Can't wait as the fabrics are so expensive for me anywhere else.

scrappycats 06-05-2011 10:54 AM

Good NEWS!

IMHO I may be in the minority here. Walmart is the closest store to us, just one mile away, but I rarely shop there. Our Walmart is recently reopened and it's new and clean and huge, but the staff is not interested in working or in customers.

And I'm not a big fan of Walmart fabric. I would rather shop at quilt shops, or online for quilt shop quality fabric from Hancock's, Thousands of Bolts,or eQuilter.

BluegrassGurl 06-05-2011 12:32 PM

You go Twinkie!!! It could not have been better said.... and what a venue!!!!

justflyingin 06-05-2011 12:33 PM

I'm glad but a lot of people think that "walmart fabric" isn't worth using.

As for me--I had my husband buy enough Walmart running wolves fabric so that I can sell it when it is vintage (and still beautiful!) :)

And I wanted to add that I know that SOME of the stuff on the tables at Walmart wasn't worth buying, but the stuff that was actually sold as quilting fabric was fine--doesn't shrink unnecessarily, has a decent hand, etc. It isn't like the "really fine" stuff, but honestly...it looks good in a quilt. And I also have seen some of the $4-5/yard stuff selling elsewhere for quite a bit more.

Minnesewta-sam 06-05-2011 12:41 PM

Thanks for sharing. I seldom buy fabric at WM, but I like to look at it and know it's there if I need it.

blueangel 06-05-2011 12:42 PM

That is great news.

twinkie 06-05-2011 12:43 PM

Please, this thread is not about whether you like Wal Mart fabric or not. If you don't use (or don't care for) Wal Mart fabric, commenting on this thread about fabric quality is not necessary. This is for us quilters who use some Wal Mart fabric and are so happy that it is coming back. About higher prices, prices at Wal Mart stores that kept their fabric have increased along with the market. Also, when I went to my store to work last night, I was told that they had received a box of fabric on bolts while I was gone. I am so glad to know that Wal Mart has reacted to the wishes and desires of their customers. My personal thanks to all of you who contacted them about bringing fabric back.

Thank you, thank you for saying what I was thinking.
I for one am very happy that the fabric is coming back.

merrylouw 06-05-2011 01:17 PM

Thank you for passing along this good news.

I feel a sense of satisfaction that a corporation as huge as WalMart is listening, and responding, to their customers. This, IMHO, is what the free market system is all about, and what makes America a great country.

Whether you like WalMart fabric or not, Hooray for them!

Lynn Luker 06-05-2011 01:23 PM

I've been listening to the buzz going around, but it's great to hear from someone who really KNOWS! Thanks for the first hand account!!

SherriB 06-05-2011 01:39 PM

YAY!!!!!! Even though we didn't lose our fabric, I am beyond thrilled that it is coming back to the stores!!!! I am slowing winning over my younger DD to sew and hopefully quilt. She wants to learn to make pajama bottoms.

booklady 06-05-2011 02:47 PM

would love to see which stores are among the 300.

I think she said it was 700 stores.

debcavan 06-05-2011 03:02 PM

Happy dancing and praising the lord

caliquocat 06-05-2011 03:07 PM

That has to be great news for those of you that live near a Walmart. Every penny saved means more quilts in the long run. I have 2 LQS plus JoAnn's. I'm always shopping the internet for bargains.

sammygirlqt 06-05-2011 03:33 PM

Did they say if this would include Walmarts in Canada? I live in a community with no fabric available. WM has put in some cheapy precuts, we need our regular department back.

Nettie Phillips 06-05-2011 05:54 PM

YEAH,YEAH. I hope they will have a variety and not order the
same fabric when they run out of some. Every store had the
same fabric all the time.

kbs 06-05-2011 06:00 PM

I guess they (WalMart) realize the power of a woman and her sewing machine. I have one great place to shop for fabrics but every thing else if hours away. Will be nice to have a choice.

quiltgrammyt2 06-05-2011 06:13 PM

I'm glad to hear this, I do make some quilts from QS fabric but can NOT afford to do this on all of them, most of mine made with QS fabric are throws or wall hangings, not big enough for the beds.

Thanks for sharing the great story!

twinkie 06-05-2011 07:32 PM

I am so excited as this was my department for the 3 years before they closed the department. I love Fabrics and Crafts!!

quiltingaz 06-05-2011 07:55 PM

My store is a newer one that never had fabric. I wonder if we will get it. Probably not.

bdship 06-05-2011 08:44 PM

It's great to know our voices were heard. I was one of those who let them know I was REALLY upset with them !

twinkie 06-05-2011 08:47 PM

I don't know if it will get fabric or not, however, I will do my best to try and find out. If you send me a PM, I will try to let you know.
