Family Heirloom Quilt Top Rescued

4 Attachment(s)
Quite a while ago I unearthed a quilt top that was hand pieced by my aunt, now approaching 90 years old, made of genuine 1930s fabrics. It was sitting in my studio for months and every now and again I'd pick it up and try to figure out how to quilt it. Being hand pieced the blocks were not entirely even, but I still loved it. When our home was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, I eventually found it in the muck. I had to save it and washed it many times. Quilting Board sweetie, SewDamnCute, came to visit and offered to quilt it for me (along with my Bucket of Strips Quilt). When it came back to me, I was over the moon! My aunt won't be around for much longer, but I now have something tangible to hold onto -- to remember her when she was young. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.

How wonderful that you were able to save it -- and how wonderful that someone stepped in to help you by quilting it. Beautiful job done both in piecing AND the quilting! How precious that quilt must be to you!

So glad it turned out beautiful for you. I hold on to things inherited from my family too, (not quilts as they couldn't sew on a button !).

I asked that of Darlene (Sewdamncute) myself. She used that time honored technique -- laying it out on the grass in the sun! My grandmother, mother and I all did that with lace doilies and tablecloths. Works wonderfully.

What a beautiful quilt! You will have to to remember both your aunt and a friend who helped you finish it.

I have no idea. She worked for a major publishing house up until a couple of months ago, so I would imagine it was from some long discarded pattern.

What a wonderful story. I am finishing hand quilting a wedding ring quilt from my grandmother. Just before she died (age 93), she made the last square. It was given to me years ago to finish and I did make the sandwich. I can tell you I made every mistake possible - wrong seam allowance, wrong backing, wrong batting, etc. but I will treasure it always - if I ever get it finished!

Jingle 06-25-2013 08:41 AM

Absolutely beautiful, quilt and quilting. Very great colors and pattern. So glad you Ladies were able to finish it up. You have a real treasure.

Krystyna, I was totally oblivious you had lost everything in Sandy! I am so sorry. Amazing that you were able to rescue this quilt and it looks like it never saw such devastation. It looks absolutely wonderful. I am so happy a fellow board member was able to quilt it for you.
