Family Heirloom Treasure

Attached are pictures of a quilt I found when I decided to clean out some clothes I had been storing for a while. The quilt was at the bottom of the plastic tote I thought I only had blouses in. When I discovered the quilt I had a strong suspicion it may have been one my mother made, or possibly my Grandmother. I washed it carefully, dried it on the line and tucked it away again for safety. My neice stopped by today. She spent many hours with my mom sewing and talking. They were like best friends. Anyway, when I showed her the quilt, she said Mom told her it was the last quilt her mother made her!! What a treasure! Considering I learned to sew and quilt from my Mom and Grandmother. To actually have one my grandmother hand quilted is beyond measure. I had to share the story with others who would understand the feelings I am going through and how much this quilt means to me.
The second picture shows how much our new pup Sadie has grown. She loves her picture taken too. The third one shows the hand quilting. Thanks for sharing your time and my memories. |

Have a Blessed day Ellen |
What a great find, made your day I bet.
Of course, you don't need to be told what a treasure you've found. I wish I could think of something smart to say, but well, I can't. So I'll mimic everyone else and congratulate you. Just make sure that you add a label with the quilt story so it's preserved in the future. The thought of your family losing the story or the quilt is just too sad.
Nice keepsake!!
How marvelous for you. Pretty quilt, great memories.
I am so happy for you! Be sure and write down all the information you can for successive generations.
You are so lucky to say the least............ I had a little quilt my grandmother made and an old wooden snow cutter she had used for my mother and her siblings. When we moved back to our home town my grandmother sent the quilt and cutter to my house so I could bring the kids over to see her and grandpa during the winter.......... I am sad to say the quilt got worn out and when it wasn't used in the cutter the kids had it with them all the time don't even have a picture of it..... I so wish I had that quilt or at least a picture.... You have such a treasure.

What a wonderful find! You say you "tucked it away again for safety". Why? It looks like it still needs a binding. Why don't you finish the quilt and display it at least once in a while. If it is tucked away it won't be enjoyed and eventually the fabric will deteriorate anyway from being folded. I say enjoy it.

Isn't it wonderful to have something that your grandmother made? I have an unfinished quilt that my grandmother made for my mother's wedding. So if I remember right the quilt is about 79 years old. My mom told me that grandma would look at a dress in the catalog and would make one just like it. Must be where I got my love of sewing.

I'm glad you found out who made the quilt. nice surprise
Lovely quilt! I know you cherish it.
How wonderful that you were able to determine the history. Makes it very special.
You're so lucky to have something your grandmother made, it's beautiful!!
I am going to add a label to the back so the story isn't lost. I've thought about rebinding it and displaying it sometimes on my stair rail. I need to get my puppy trained better so she won't decide it's hers and pull it down.
Thanks for all your comments of support and understanding. What a great group of caring people!! |
A lovely quilt to remember your grandmother and carry on the heritage.
