Has anyone on this board ever done a family tree quilt?
I spent about two years talking myself into it, and now it's finished, except for the hanging sleeve. Size is 23.5 x 33.5" My grandparents are the roots, parents/aunts/uncles are the branches, self and cousins are the leaves. I thought about doing one for the maternal side, but there aren't nearly as many cousins on that side. Now that I've done the work, there are several things I would have done differently (or better), but this will do for now. I'd love to see others, if anybody has made one. |
I love it!!! This will be a cherished heirloom!!! You did a wonderful job :D :D :D

Heirloom is the word! It's stunning, what a great idea, I've never seen one like this - only the pre-printed panels. I like yours better!

Wonderful treasure!

Thank you all for the kind words! I hope others are inspired to make their own, not to ask me to make one for them!
It was indeed a labor of love, not perfection (so many things I would do differently, if I had to do it again). I had not given any thought to who would receive it...it will be my son, unless some other neice or nephew turns out to be more interested or appreciative. I'm still wondering if there are other family trees out there! |

This is truly inspiring! I absolutely love it!

Sounds like you have only one child, which is good. Means there will not be squabbles over who inherits your wonderful quilt! As for being asked to make another - offer them a picture! Yes, only one child. The aunts and uncles are very anxious to see the tree in June at the family picnic. But I have also sent photos around to those in the family that have e-mail, in case they cannot make it to the picnic. I get the feeling some of them will be more likely to show up because of this whole thing! |

As for others making their own - can I ask, did you have a pattern to go by or make it up? The pattern is my own. As the project got underway though, things morphed somewhat, so my finished tree doesn't look quite like the pattern. |
Very nice.

i've thought about doing one - actually bought the fabric, but ended up using it for something else

wow, that is gorgeous. Great job! It looks like you embroidered the names on. Just wondering, did you do this by hand or machine. If you did it by machine did you do it after the leaves, etc. were already on or did you do them before and then attach the leaves.

What a cool idea. I really like it. GREAT JOB!

If you did it by machine did you do it after the leaves, etc. were already on or did you do them before and then attach the leaves. Thank you. I hand embroidered all of the names. The leaves are too small to have used anything fancier than a simple backstitch. I embroidered everything on the leaf fabric first, so I could use the hoop, then cut the leaves out and appliqued onto the background fabric. About midway through the project I read about some better applique techniques; now of course I wish I had done it differently. |
My what a work of art....totally awesome!...:-)

gcathie,
Thanks to you, too! I still haven't heard if anyone else on this board has made their own family tree! |
i have NOT made a family tree quilt, but your's really has inspired me - except for that whole hand embroidery thing - SCARY!
It truly is beautiful! |

Are you one of the lucky ladies with a sewing machine that does embroidery? That would sure open up possibilities for this type of project. On the other hand, I think my family will appreciate the hand work...it makes it more personal -- more of an heirloom. |
The quilt is beautiful. I am not so much into hand work so it would be done by machine if I were to do one.
My mom did a family tree quilt, only she didn't use a tree for it. She used a rainbow, Grandma and grandpa were on the bottom and each generation went up a color, and the higher the color the bigger it is to accomidate the extra people. She put pictures of everyone on with dates that she printed off on her computer. She origionally did it for my grandfather that was having a hard time keeping the hords of people straight, nothing seemed easy for him after he lost his site, especially when trying to tell other people. She is in the process of updating it now. There has been several additions since she first did it. I don't have a picture of it. But sure she will take one when she is done. |
What a beautiful way to remember the generations of your family. Really lovely quilt.

Please do post a picture when you can...the rainbow idea is something I never would have thought of. Is it a full size quilt? |
