Here is a picture of my lovelies! I do use them occasionally but mostly I just open the drawer and stroke them. Anyone else have this problem?

For sure that is me

Very pretty. I don't buy fat quarters.
I have so many that I had to "protect" them in a couple of large tubs & right now I need another tub! In the meantime, the ones that won't fit in tubs are being sung to, talked to, & prayed for! Thanks for posting!

Unfortunately, I think my stash gets more affection than my family members. |
yup! me too. love the B&W one with the symbols on it. lower first column
oh yes, i was given many fat qtrs and fat eights and still have four small drawers of them.. i do have them sorted in colors, prints, etc. one day I will get on them.
Not exactly but I have sorted and RE-sorted what I have trying to decide what to do with them.
It can be an addiction! |
I keep pulling them out and chomping them into little pieces, but they multiply when I turn the lights out. Those naughty fat quarters!
Yep! My problem too
boy so neat and tidy
I don’t have very many FQs but there are several in the bunch that are safeguarded from cutting until a special occasion comes along.
Fat quarters and brownies are my down fall. Lol..... Lovely collection. I made fabric baskets (Camden Bowls) and roll my FQ to place in them.
Because if I use them, I won’t have them. If I don’t have them, I can’t use them.

I have trouble cutting up my batiks
OH yes!!!
Your FQs are lovely. |
I have an old curio cabinet which hold my FQs. For some reason, they are so much harder to cut than other fabrics...
Ha! You're an amateur! I have so many lovely fabrics stashed in so many places that sometimes I'm surprised when I run across a hiding place I forgot I had. Just last week I came across a shoebox full of red fat quarters at the back of an armoire. I know exactly what you're talking about - just looking at the stash gives a feeling of satisfaction and reorganizing the stash is a relaxing pastime. Probably has something to do with the "gathering" women are supposed to do instinctually. At least that's my excuse.
I never like FQs until I found I could use them in a med.pumpkin seed pattern....I used to always buy (I hate to admit) 3yds of fabric when I didn't know what I would make with it....at least I knew I'd have enough. But buying like that left me with a LOT of material for scrappies. I've bought FQs when JA has them on sale and I too just like looking at them on the shelf!!! (Nasty habit!!!) But I am seriously trying to get around to using them up---not easy!!! LOL!
I have an old card catalog cabinet full and two large containers that slide under a bed full and I do use them. I recently made a quilt that used 45 fats..didn't make a dent! I wish I would quit buying but the fabric is so beautiful I can't help it. It is really my only vice!
I had (have) a complete dresser filled with fat quarters. Each drawer was for a specified color and had dividers to separate the rows of fabric. After years of petting the fabric I realized what a waste it was not to use them. Finally spent a month cutting each one up into a 10 x 10 square, charm squares and a left over strip that I can cut 2 l/2" pieces from. The 10 x 10 are in plastic containers, I have 8 cube containers of charms, and I'm currently pairing the neutral strips with color strips to later use for a 9 patch quilt. I can finally see me using my material up!
What a great selection.
I don't buy fabric just to buy fabric. I have been known to mis-calculate the yardage I need for a quilt (mostly because I do not want to not have enough). Last time I looked I had a small pile about 2 feet tall. (yes I know 2ft not worth mentioning here (LOL)). Mike |
My sister gave me about 52 of them a couple of years ago. I have no trouble using them though.

I am a Scrappy Lover, so I always have a use for FQs and used to be given many by a now deceased friend who loved to buy FQs. And when some piece of fabric gets too small I cut it into a FQ. The drawers are about half and half FQ size and when pieces get cut away.
I have a large collection of fat quarters too it seems. I keep mine in shoe box size totes by color as I have acquired that many and some of the boxes are getting quite full.
Nice collection.
I have two of those plastic drawer units on wheels (perfect size for FQ's) and they are about 2/3 full right now. I LOVE FQ's!
I use most of mine but the year I turned 60 my wonderful sister bought me 60 fat quarters, one for each year! Not a fabric collection, just random colors and patterns. Forward 7 years and I still can't cut them!
Why do we have a problem cutting up Fat qtrs yet we cut large pieces of fabric all the time without thinking twice?

I've fallen in love with FQ bundles. I bought a few from (cough Michael's). LQS shut down 2 yrs ago. Fabric stores have closed to do gentrification. I make sampler quilts so I like the challenge of seeing how many 12 inch blocks I can get from a FQ bundle. Ive decided to try to make my own bundles from my single FQ collection.
That is the best part of having a stash...you can get it out, look at it, stroke it and then put it back for next time.
Fat quarters must be the quilter's version of a change jar. (Your drawer is great.)
Your comments are cracking me up !! :D
I have a collection as well. I did get rid of a lot of fabric lately though. For me it was too much and made me nervous. I know that sounds weird for a quilter. I get overwhelmed easily! |
Collecting fabric and quilting are two different hobbies!
I buy mostly FQ's and half yards and they get used. I like 50+ fabrics in every quilt and small cuts allow me to have a variety without breaking the bank.
I have four bags of fat quarters & I'm always going through them for various quilts & I'm always adding to them during really good sales. I keep them in those special fat quarter bags with the see-through covers so I can enjoy their beauty all the time.
