Feather Swirl

2 Attachment(s)
It's been so long since I've posted a photo here! :) I thought I'd share a new quilt design I just learned. The owner of this quilt asked me to try the feather swirl design from Green Fairy Quilts - this is how mine turned out! It's not identical but I'm really happy with it. I'm going to have to use this again! I think this would make such a good tiny filler design too. :)

Thank you! I had to draw it more than a few times before it made sense! Even after that I had to stop at first to plan where I was going to go next until I got into a groove. The trick is traveling. I used the swirls and echoing the feathers as my form of "travel". I think of the feather swirl itself as sort of, the main attraction...then I just swirl and echo around it until I fill up the space!

Did that sound super duper cheesy enough? LOL

Thank you Diane! No, this is not a panto it is free hand! :) I rarely use pantographs as I just really enjoy the process of coming up with designs. :)

For this one in particular, my customer had see the "feather swirl" tutorial over at Green Fairy Quilts and asked me to replicate the look. My isn't exactly like Judi's, but I sort of came up with my own version. :)

Thank you! It's nice to BE on QB again! I've just been so busy lately I haven't been able to come visit and see what everyone is up to. I love this for an overall too - and I agree, it will make a really cool filler!

Thank you! I drew it out many times before putting it on this customers quilt. She requested it so it kind of forced me to learn it! :) But I'm glad I did because I will use it again. I think it was the traveling that was tricky at first. When you "travel" to make your next feather swirl, you want to echo back around the feather and add small swirls in the spaces that aren't easily filled by the larger feather swirls. Maybe I'll do a YouTube video on this one? LOL

Kathi in PA 09-20-2013 03:05 AM

I love the quilting and the quilt!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeannette51 09-20-2013 04:14 AM

feline fanatic 09-20-2013 04:27 AM

freehand designs like that are as individual as handwriting. Everyone's will look slightly different. Yours looks great.
