LOL Tim!
Pam - you keep on obsessing girl, whatever you're doing, don't change a thing because your work is FANTASTIC! But if you've got a little precision to spare, I could do with some of it! I WANT to be precise but then I think 'what the hey' and just slap something together, but then I regret it and wish I'd taken more time. You have to do whatever you need to do to be happy with your work. K x |

I agree, obsess away! That is a stunning quilt and you are putting it together so quickly. Wow! Thank you for sharing.

Pam~Where have I been? I saw your feathered star when you posted it~but this thread has totally escaped me until now!!!
I LOVE your quilt!!!! You do such beautiful work!! The layout is just gorgeous! Thanks for posting progress pics as you work. It is fun to see it all come together. I know you must have said before (like when you posted your FS) but I have forgotten~what line of fabric is this? The colors are beautiful for your design. |
Me too Pam...I missed this thread!!! Wow!!! Do you ever sleep or take a break to do anything else girl? This is coming together beautifully....I'm loving watching your mind at work. I'm already leaping ahead to wonder how you are going to quilt it...I envious lots of yummy quilting patterns in those blank spaces...

Beautiful!!

Tim, if I had that many to work on I'm afraid that I would just curl into a ball and whimper.... or start another one to take my mind off it.
It's not totally precise, some of the star points aren't as pointy as they should be. I also said "what the hey" after trying to shrink 2 of them in only one direction! My daughter certainly won't care, or probably even notice. It doesn't FEEL like it's been a short time. I think I've been working on this for a month and still don't have the first row completely sewn on! I like the design part as much as, sometimes more than, putting it together. It does change as I work on it, a lot different than my first drawings of it. The fabric is the Twiggy collection by Moda. I told my daughter to go to Fat Quarter Shop and look at the fabrics and pick some out she liked and this was one of them. Do I sleep? Yeah, but I dream of quilting. I was almost asleep last night and thought... why did I do the log cabins around the edge? It would achieve the same effect if I did HSTs. There's a thought but, I would need more fabric. It's getting pretty tight and I am not absolutely sure there is enough to finish the LCs. I am not liking them a little bit either. The dark side is the brown and mulberry, the light is the blue and green. The green isn't really "light" though and it might not look right. |
I think it's absolutely GORGEOUS! I do like the log cabin border a lot though too.....

Well Pam, only you can really tell about the LC blocks cause we can't really "see" the fabric. I'm pretty sure that you will make the right decision though.

My studio is in a small back house. Upstairs. If I want to pretend it doesn't exist, I can do that for months at a time. Nothing ever HAS to get done. It is my refuge and when I feel like working on any one particular project, it's a matter of changing bobbin thread. Right now the SW Medallion quilt is the most interesting, the wedding quilt needs to be done by October, and my daughters quilt needs to be finished by next February. Not a lot of pressure (If I keep from starting anything new). When they are done, I would like to complete (never use the 'F' word) my two queen sized quilts before it gets cold (as cold as it gets here in the valley) next fall. There really isn't any pressure, I use my Q space as an escape from dogs, cats, birds, kids, etc. tim in san jose |

No, nothing ever HAS to get done, just a desire to get a creation completed and see it become what you imagined.
A little bit of progress this evening. Got all of the small stars sewn together and sewn onto first border and got one of the second border sides sewn on. Now that I know where the pattern placement is the other 3 will be easier to do. |
Pam that is looking beautiful; I have to say I like the blue - I think I would have been afraid to use it but it really brings the quilt alive! As for the LCs, as Patti said, it's hard for us to say when we can't see the fabric in reality but your eye is impeccable so whatever you chose to do will be fantastic!

That's absolutely stunning!
I love the colours, they work so well. Very nice job! |
Its really coming together!!!! I think I'm more excited about it than you are!

Hmmm.... I just thought of something. When doing the larger stars, that are really flying geese, I am sewing point-to-point on the colored square and then cutting off the excess. I have a big stack of HSTs that are a bunch of pairs of a color and a beige. I've been keeping them neatly stacked thinking I might be able to use them sometime.
Every star gives me 8 of these pairs, total of 160 pairs, so it might be possible to use them as a border. At least I have another option if the LCs don't work out. |

I just took another look at the LCs... I guess they're ok and they're almost done too.
Thinking of the HSTs for the border gave me an idea about a border on the Giant Dahlia. I want to do a white border, like the background, all around and a flower and ribbon quilting stencil I ordered. I don't want to do the traditional angled square border that I usually see. The white would be very plain though but I thought... how about using the template for the petal in the Dahlia and doing a prairie point with it in the medium blue? It would continue the petals out to the edge. |
I did that on a 'Wild Goose' quilt, and it worked well. Kept everything together and satisfied my 'Don't ever throw anything away nature.' I sewed the HSTs together as I sewed the 'real' wild geese together, so the HSTs were ready to go in the border when I was finished.

Looking good, Pam!! You really must dream about quilting too--because one idea on your FS quilt now has given you an idea for your dahlia quilt!!!! You are toooooo funny!!!

My friend and I were working on a Crossroads quilt which called for lots of snowballs. On the first quilt, we sewed each of the extra seams before cutting our excess off, VIOLA! HST (y'all are teaching me! <g>). The next quilt, I said: oh, forget the extra seam, I will do something different with the triangles... well ... I ended up sewing the same two triangles together, exactly as they came off the original block ... more time, more fuss, for no more effect than the first time. Using the extra in the border or on the back (or as seed for another quilt) or as a baby quilt ... you are miles ahead to take care of them now (IMHO), while everything is right there. Nothing says you have to press them open and square them up until you are ready to work on that project ... but, as I learned from QUiltivlle - - two quilts at a time, is not a bad deal! |
