I just can't stand to make any more of the litte 6" stars! I didn't want to work on anything the last two days because of them. So, I cut it down from 28 to 12 stars.

I also made the second row of stars simpler. I am anxious to get this done because I have so many more planned out and have the material for and I've resolved to not have multiplying UFOs.

Is it becoming too plain? The next version might lose the log cabins around the edges! :lol:

Awesome Pam....plain I think not.....it will give you a chance to showcase some fantastic quilting......and I can relate to those stars......oh my....I do feel your pain....:-)......and for some reason certain colors are that way to me...just can't wait to finish and i resolve not to have to many UFO's....too.....Your half done....it will be finished before you know it and the log cabins will dress the quilt fantastic......You always do such great work.....I'll be waiting for this one to be done very soon!!......:-)......You go girl....:-)

I don't think it's too plain and agree with Cathie that the plain squares will give you a chance to show some of you great hand quilting! Maybe star motifs to keep the theme going?

As for the log cabins - i hope you use them because I really like them but have myself planned elaborate borders then ended up putting a plain one on because my mind and heart are already moving on to the next project! :D

I think it gives the eye a nice rest. You can do some really awesome quilting in those blank spaces to fill it in.

Thank you all... the more I look at it the more I like it, maybe even better than all the small stars. It does give the eye a rest between them. I really like the feathered star, my first one, and I didn't want to give up on it. I had to do with it what would make me happy to keep working on it. The small stars at the points of the FS looks good to me and the larger stars are just flying geese units. When things go too slow I get impatient to keep creating something new.

K3n, I'll have to take a look at some star quilting stencils. I just ordered a bunch of stencils but I don't think I any were stars.

I actually have the 48 log cabins in the works. All of them have at least 2 rows of light and dark, some of them the next strip of dark... and a few of them have the third strip of light even but that day nothing was going right and I wanted to get something DONE so I did the last strips of light on 4 of them, go to iron them, and see that I put the last strip on the wrong sides together. I was soooo done and had to do something about the stars that were making me not like what I was doing.

I don't think it looks too plain, as long as you leave in the inner borders. Nice job!

I like the way I can actually see what a pattern is, even have a chance to see the fabric you used to create the stars with. The log cabin border is a really nice finishing touch.
A quilt is a celebration of angles, color, pattern, and fabric choices. I think your quilt celebrated a lot of things in just the right balance.

You are doing so good to only have 3 in the works. Most quilters probably have a WHOLE lot more than that. I know how it is when you see something you want to try, I see them every day. I know how I can be about things like that... do one of them (block), then it gets put away to do something else and before you know it you have UFOs all over the place.

I am trying really hard to not do that. I have 3 finished tops that are waiting their turn in the frame, one that is being appliqued and worked on when I feel like doing that, and several that are planned with pictures and fabric waiting. I would love to get started on a new one but I WILL finish this one first.... except for the two baby quilts that I started this week. :lol:

I finished the small stars last night, YAY! and I have 19 of the larger stars to do. Before I start cranking them out I need to figure out if I have enough of the same background for all of them AND the space between the small stars or, do I need to incorporate the 6 other beiges in the FQ set of the fabric collection. If I do need to use the other fabric, do I use them in the large stars or, do I use them between the small stars?

Probably in the large stars so it doesn't break up the small ones so much.

Plain? I don't think so, Pam. It look very complicated to me but you're doing a lovely job!!!!! I can't wait to see the finished product.

I used the Marti Michell feathered star template set P. I've had the templates for many years but I never used it for the feathered star, I used parts of it for other things.

There may be a better way to do the feathers. I cut out every single triangle and sewed them together individually. It would be much easier and more efficient to sew them in squares on both sides of a center line and then cut them in two.

It wasn't too hard to make, I just had to be very careful about the 1/4" seams. I did a scant 1/4" at first but even that little bit made the row of feathers that attach to the sides of the star points a smidgen too long. I had to re-sew the seams a TINY bit to make them fit.

The way it is put together is in rows so there are no set in seams, which is a pain to do. It also uses partial seams, which go together quite nicely when you get used to it.

Seems like I worked on this all day but not much visual progress. I spent a lot of time going over my measurements and got most of the pieces cut for the large stars. I decided to use the material I originally got for the border as the borders between the stars. That started a whole other round of measurements, pattern placement and mitered corners.

The inner border is sewn on but still need to sew the miter (it's pinned) and the right row of small stars is sewn together. Don't know if I will be able to finish it this weekend like I wanted to.

Pam, so loving this quilt...each one of yours is so yummy,...so inspires me to keep on trucking along. I have told so many ppl this, but it is really true...didn't think I would ever really 'like' feathered stars, for myself, but after seeing what you can do...and with blue and brown...girlfriend, think you could make roadkill look appetizing...now visualize that in a quilty way!!! LOL! :wink:

I doubt that it will be done in time for the county fair this year. it's already April and the fair is in June or July, I think? It's definately got to be hand quilted and that's going to take me months unless I don't work on anything else.

Fortunately the LCs are well on their way to being done since I took a break from the little stars and worked on them. A couple more rows should do it since they are tiny rows. I cut jelly strips in half so they are 3/4" finished strips. I'm just adding strips until they are 6 1/2" unfinished size. That will be an easy row compared to the others, I don't have to figure out the width of a border to make the previous row exactly fit the next row. They just attach to the larger stars, which are 12" finished, so it's 2 LCs per star around the edge.

I have 9 more large stars to go, need 5 per color. The right row of small stars is sewn onto the inner border and the left side is sewn together. I need 33" from seam-to-seam across between them and it seems to be lining up correctly on the pattern of the border. **whew**

...only 3? that's what I'm screamin', lol!!!
I have 5 quilty projects, unless, you count all my stash bundles, then it's more like 50, for real...each one is for a certain person.
But haven't ever counted all my sewing wip's...almost typed ufo's...not, not using that term anymore :wink:

Thanks so much for the words of wisdom. It's been a lot of work and I so appreciate the generous people here that give me encouragement to not give up when the going gets tough.

So loving, the inner border that frames the center star,...that is just gorgeous...and all the other stars, etc. wow! If i knew I could create like this, I would be quilting in my sleep...well, sometimes I am, but not really getting anything done, but do enjoy the dreams. You make it so easy to be supportive. :D

If I wanted to be picky about it... I didn't quite nail the placement of the side star strips and the pattern of the border, the tips of the blue/white flower are cut off more on the right. But I am less than a 16th of an inch off on the 33" measurement from seam to seam and I gave a big sigh of relief after sewing on the second side and measuring it.

I need to stop obsessing about it!

It's REALLY looking good - especially the gorgeous feathered star. I like your new simplified version. My new motto is to not make it so complicated that I get tired or discouraged before I finish! This looks like another of Pam's beauties.

I really love seeing your WIP. It's been fun to put our 2 cents in and watch your design mind at work. It's looking GREAT!. The way you're doing it now REALLY puts the emphasis on the FS where it should be. The blue in the other stars makes the tips of the FS POP.

I have to laugh too. There is:

the SW medallion quilt top 1/3 done,
the wedding DIC is 70% done.
YBR is pinned and ready to quilt.
Homeward bound top is finished, needs to be layered and pinned.
the Amish Sunshine and Shadow is 50% done.
My daughter's 'Entwined' is 30% done.
a special quilt of special batiks about 25% done.
two other SW quilts just started.
that huge paper pieced quilt.. about 1% done.

nothing much on my plate.
