Feathers... My newest challenge

3 Attachment(s)
Tried the proven way... It actually works . When I first tried to learn to do feathers about 3 years ago, I couldn't quite wrap my brain around the process. I did it backwards! Decided to keep trying. Used my glass doors as my dry erase board, so I could erase to my hearts content.... And then just went for it. I must say I am pleased! Still needs some practice to make it perfect... But I'll get there!

Great job! I haven't ever been able to do that(and its my favourite look), what is the proven way?

FURBALLS 03-29-2014 09:24 AM

Beautiful job  Your quilt is really pretty and the quilting is great. Sometimes it just all of a sudden "clicks". Thats what happened for me and the feather issue. Be proud of your accomplishment!

ScubaK 03-29-2014 09:32 AM

I'd like to know what helped you to do these feathers?

Way to go

love your idea of working on a glass door

You did a nice job on the feathers. Maybe if I spent more time at my sewing machine and less time here on the board I would be able to do that!!;)

Annz 03-29-2014 10:20 AM

I must say, your feathers are beatiful and so are you stiches and the quilt. Congratulations!

donnamcr 03-29-2014 05:16 PM

Did you use a method of marking the feathers, or did you just "eyeball it"? You have done an outstanding job!

QuiltNama 03-29-2014 05:50 PM

Twinsister, I think your feathers look pretty darn perfect to me. Nice job on your quilt.

You're doing great!!! I wouldn't even post a pic of my first feathers!!!! LOL They DO take a lot of practice....and if you don't do them for a while, it takes MORE practice to do them again!!!! Keep at it, don't give up!

I watched several YouTube videos. I couldn't get the hang of doing a bit of retracing on the most upper part of the feather. I was also going totally backwards from what the videos show. Just watch the videos over an over and then practice on paper or a white board or chalk board. Then go for it!

Watched YouTube videos and then practiced a lot! Lots of times there might be more than one way to do something. My way of doing the feather stitch was backwards and I couldn't figure out how to put it in a triangle and curl. I watched several on line videos and then had to kind of re-train my direction of quilting. Then I even drew it on a paper and had it by me while I tried it on this quilt.

twinsister2 03-29-2014 08:20 PM

Videos online . Find a site with a quilter who explains it so you can comprehend... Then watch over and over! Then practice wherever you can . My patio door was easy to quickly practice on several times, erase, and do again when I walked by it! Be brave !

"I want to be like you!" Great job, twin sister, albeit not My twin sister! :)

Really...I really want to get them figured out.

Very nice. I think you've got it! I am thoroughly convinced that determination and practice, practice, practice is the key to successful free motion quilting.
