This is my attempt at going back to quilting (this is my second). I did one other 20 years ago! I would really like your opinions on the placement of the applique pieces and whether or not this will be worth finishing or just keeping as a top in the closet. Please keep in mind that the applique pieces are just sitting on the pieced top. I would like to spend the rest of the weekend hand appliqueing these so I can start on the OBW on Monday!

Thanks everyone,

BKinCO 01-30-2010 01:11 PM

I LOVE it! Wouldn't do anything any different!

Prism99 01-30-2010 01:11 PM

Oh, I think that is just lovely and definitely worth finishing into a quilt!!!

My one comment is that I think I would like to see the cat combination of appliques spread apart a little more, to cover a slightly larger area -- especially upwards.

adriansmom 01-30-2010 01:11 PM

I think it is beautiful!! Definitely worth finishing. If you don't like/want it when you're through, I know a good charity you can send it to!! It's called...Cathy-loves-it-and-needs-it please!! LOL!! Good work and can't wait to see it when you are done!

sewnsewer2 01-30-2010 01:13 PM

I like it the way it is to, YES, finish it, it's too cute to sit in the closet.

LoriJ 01-30-2010 01:13 PM

Oh Bailey, I like that! The combination of squares and flowers along with the color contrast will look great. The only thing I would change would be to have more than one flower in the upper group. I've always done machine applique, too scared to try hand applique, good for you!

Maride 01-30-2010 01:13 PM

Is excellent. Please finish it. If when you are finish you still are not satistied, send it my way...just kidding. I love it.

Thank you both for looking. I think I like it but I will play around a little more with moving the cats apart more and up as suggested. Never thought of doing that - it might work! Sorry for the not so good picture. I really need to get something up on a wall before I start the OBW.

Off to play some more with the appliques.

bailey 01-30-2010 01:17 PM

LoriJ - there is actually 3 flowers in the upper grouping I just take lousy pictures! LOL

Thanks everyone.

Maybe you can see the 3 top flowers in this picture better.

littlehud 01-30-2010 02:09 PM

That is beautiful. Don't change a thing.

butterflywing 01-30-2010 02:26 PM

i think the flowers on the bottom, left should go on the top, left to balance the ones on the bottom, right. this way they look bottom heavy. on a rectangular bed, it's hard to balance three groupings. it's easier to stay with even numbers.
either opposite corners or opposite ends or opposite sides.

when it's all done, send it here. nobody ever sends me anything. boo hoo! :-( :-(

Even before I finished reading your sentence, I knew what you were going to say. There are many charities out there and I have heard of another called "Anne Loves It Too".

One of the things you'll learn in nearly any art class is an uneven number of things is more dynamic. I love your arrangement just the way it is.

NorBanaquilts 01-30-2010 02:39 PM

You really need to finish it. It will be worth it.

Darlene 01-30-2010 02:46 PM

That quilt is so cute. I like it just the way it is. I disaagree on placement I always do uneven numbers in anything.

touche. but hard to accomplish without a practiced eye or an art background. imho (HAH!  ) the cats in the corner are perfect. the other flowers might be better either scattered (so that the un-even cluster is still there) or clustered in another, opposing, place. that other place does not have to be a corner such as the cats are in, but should be distanced so that there is balance.

mamaw 01-30-2010 02:52 PM

Oh my gosh!!! It is lovely and so worth finishing just the way it is.

beckyw 01-30-2010 02:54 PM

Finish it. Very nice quilt. You did a nice job.

dakotamaid 01-30-2010 03:23 PM

No matter where you put the cats they will be darling! I think where they are now is great!!

eparys 01-30-2010 03:26 PM

Finish it - It is adorable!!

renee765 01-30-2010 04:30 PM

I'm no artist, but I REALLY like it just the way it is. The arrangements of cats and flowers are kind of 'unexpected'. I guess we all have different tastes and all the suggestions are good, I just happen to like it the way it is.

brushandthimble 01-30-2010 04:42 PM

Please finish the quilt it is beautiful!

I like the cats where they are but I think the flowers should flow (move) across the quilt, so the eye travels from top to bottom. The middle is empty.

Oklahoma Suzie 01-30-2010 04:44 PM

I love it

I think the middle is kind of empty too. More flow with the flowers would be better. I love the quilt with the kitties. I think it will be beautiful however you finish it. Don't forget to post the final picture.

   You go for it girl, its lovely!

bailey 01-30-2010 05:32 PM

Thank you all so much for the great ideas and the compliments. I will play around a bit more with the applique layout and see what I come up with but I am kinda lazy so probably won't play too much. Sandpat you may get a bag in the mail yet! It is turning out much like I had pictured it in my mind though.
Thank you all again, off to get the pieces all ready to applique and try a few more arrangements.

Bailey

P.S. I am new to this board and wondered if I should have posted under Pictures? Could someone let me know if I am in the wrong section.

jewelps 01-30-2010 05:40 PM

Evelynquilts 01-30-2010 05:45 PM

tslowery 01-30-2010 05:55 PM

Just beautiful. I think you should just send it to me....

Kara 01-30-2010 06:00 PM

Love the quilt. Love the kitties.
It's amazing how absolutely striking simple quilt blocks can be. Adding applique to them makes them better! Good job!!! :D

Loretta 01-30-2010 06:03 PM

It is beautiful. I think the applique makes it pop.

Elizabeth-Liz 01-30-2010 07:10 PM

I love it. The kitties are so cute.

barnbum 01-30-2010 07:19 PM

Oh my GOSH--that is adorable!!!!!!!!!! I love love love it.

I recognize those cats. There are some climbing a stairway on a quilt I made for my son's girl.

bailey 01-30-2010 07:35 PM

barnbum those are the same cats! I wanted to make that quilt "Stairway To Heaven" but haven't yet so I used a couple of the cats on this one.
Thank you all for the feedback, great ideas and the compliments.

Bailey

skpkatydid 01-30-2010 08:43 PM

Beautiful just the way it is. I like the idea of placing applique on top of a pieced top. Quite clever!

Leota 01-30-2010 08:50 PM

looks good to me. The kitties add class to the quilt.

judi_lynne 01-30-2010 08:53 PM

I think it is beautiful, very worth finishing! When I first saw the quilt it struck me how very nice it was, with everything placed where it is now. I think I like it just that way!
