A Few Antique Quilts I Love
5 Attachment(s)
I have a small collection of antique quilts. I love the precision and skill put into these quilts. Most of the time they used what they had on hand. I thought I would share them with a little story about them.
This is a quilt made by my DH's great grandmother in 1912. It was made from men's shirts and was hand sewn but the quilt was tied and not quilted. It appears to be a trip around the world made with rectangles and not squares. When my MIL passed in 2007, we had to empty out the house. We live in Alabama and the home was in Florida. DH went down there as he was the only child. I couldn't go because of my work schedule. He called one night and said, "Honey, we were in the garage and I found an old quilt in the chest. Do you want it?" I said, "It's not in the car yet?" He said, "No, Natalie is playing on it in the concrete driveway." After I regained consciousness, I asked him to please get it and put it up for me". I love it. This quilt was made in 1935 by the mother of a friend of mine. It is all hand pieced and quilted and I just love it. I have a few more made by the same woman. I will share them later. Thanks for looking. |

Lucky you. They are both beautiful. A "Trip Around the World" in rectangles gives a great look. The "Umbrella Girls" (?) is so very colorful.

I would have fainted too, at the thought of that quilt in the driveway!!! The umbrella/sue quilt is beautiful, and amazingly well preserved.

Love the umbrella girls! Does any one know if this pattern is still around? I would like to make wall hangings for my granddaughters bedrooms.

I believe the design is called Southern Belles. I am not sure if there is a pattern for it now. I love how she did the scallops on the border. I had a picture taken of some friends of mine with this quilt at the quilt show. BTW, Southern Belles got a 2nd place ribbon in the vintage/antique category. Here it is

They are fabulous. I can see a man asking his wife if she wants a quilt from 1912; sometimes I know God has a good laugh by what they do and say. You have a treasure. Thank you for allowing us to see them.
|
Both are beautiful. Special quilts that hold special memories. Thanks for sharing. BrendaK.

What beauties. The flowers in the Umbrella Ladies blocks look very modern...sort of Northern European/Scandinavian. Love the stories....hope you have put it in writing to be kept with the quilts.
|
Aren't they charming? I love the cheerful outlook they express. Thanks for the little show.

It's so nice that you have some history about the quilts, that doesn't always happen.
