Final Act for Lake Barkley Show
7 Attachment(s)
For ten years the fine ladies of the Lyon County Homemaker's have presented the Lake Barkley Quilt Show. It has always been a beautiful and popular event for the Western Kentucky area on this weekend in September. For many reasons ranging from expenses to age of workers the show had its final act this weekend. How sad to see this come to an end. It is my hope and prayer that some of the younger quilters may decide to pick up the cause and reopen the show in the future. Quilting is such an amazing art that continues to grow and change with each year and new idea. This art needs to be shown and shared.
I took pictures of seven of the ten "Best of Show" winners while at the show which were all displayed. I apologize for the missing three...I know I took those pictures, but they are now gone into the mysterious world of cyber dust. Thank you ladies for all of your hard work. Wow!!! So sad the tradition is ending. With such outstanding quilts present, I know I would be intimidated to submit one of mine. Hopefully someone will step up. Thanks for posting.

Gorgeous! All of them. Sooooo much beauty and talent and hard work on display under one roof would make my jaw drop. Is your quilt among the photos you posted here?
thanks for the show

I am sad for the community that this is not going to be around anymore too. Although I do not live anywhere near there, a quilt show is a wonderful event and something quilter's look forward to each year. Our show has been split into every other year. I have really missed the show on the years it is missing. It is like a tradition with me, and this is like a big hole in my life.
Now there are other shows not too far from me that I could go to. (And sometimes I do) But, it is not the same. |
Lovely quilts! The same thing is happening in my area. Putting on and organizing a quilt show is a lot of work and there just are not enough younger quilters taking the place of older quilters.
What pretty quilts. Thank you for sharing them!
Those are beautiful quilts. There was a wonderful show is Redlands CA. It was one that you walked through old homes with the quilts on display in all of the rooms, even the bathrooms. But after 5 years it was too hard to find people willing to accept the general public into their homes. The homes were as beautiful as the quilts, but I wouldn't want strangers walking thru my house even if it is for only one day a year.

some very outstanding work on these quilts. So very beautiful.
My oh my oh my. Those are amazing!! How far are you from Paducah? That show is so well known. I'm surprised yours isn't, given the caliber of these quilts. I certainly hope someone picks up the responsibility to keep it going!

Stunning quilts. Thanks for sharing. BrendaK

Hugs Caroline |
Thanks for the wonderful eye candy.
very nice thanks for sharing maureen
Breaks my heart that this is happening so often especially when the quilts are of this caliber!
Wow... with that kind of talent, somebody needs to take over hosting the show. The applique "Best of Show" quilt is amazing!
These quilts are works of art. So much work in one place. Hope your prayer comes to be.
No wonder each of those quilts won awards. I, too, hope that there will be a willing donor or organization that will continue this tradition for your area.
I always wonder, when I see quilts like this, do the people who see these quilts have any idea how much work went into them.
Beautiful quilts, thanks for sharing.
Wow, beautiful quilts...sad to see old traditions pass away.
Such beautiful work. This is why I am thrilled to see an older quilter taking a youngster under their wing.
Spectacular quilts. I also am sorry the tradition is going to end. I know it is a lot of hard work to put on a quilt show. We have one in our community and it was recently held and well attended. Hopefully, it will be missed enough that some quilters will step up to organize it again.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful quilts....I enjoyed seeing them!
Wow! Those quilts are amazing! Thanks for the share.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful quilts. The local group here has gone to every other year also. Like so many things, people are willing to help but it is hard to find someone to put her life on hold while chairing a big event.
Beautiful quilts. The work is super. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thank you for sharing! Each quilt is prettier than the one before. So sad to see the show "bite the dust."
Looks like you had an amazing group. Sad to know that this will be the last one.
So sad to see this. those quilts are stunning.
BEAUTIFUL quilts!! I join you in hoping your show will continue. Will your quilters now go to Paducah?
Gorgeous quilts!
Thanks so much for sharing. They are awe inspiring. Sorry to hear it's closing. As you said, perhaps younger quilters might take up the cause in the near future.
The quilts you shared are absolutely gorgeous:)!! Am so sorry the show is closing. That seems to be the trend....no younger ones are stepping up. Maybe a few years will pass and the show will go on....
These are some of the most gorgeous quilts I have seen. Thank you so much for posting them. Truly inspiring. I hope the show is revived, for the sake of younger generations. The world desperately needs such beauty, and such meditative occupations.
I think all the quilts you shared were wonderful. Too bad the end of the show!!!!
