This is finished except for the binding! It is for my grandson's 3rd birthday....his first "big boy quilt"!

There are no two jar fabrics the same, thanks to many people here on this site! I had about 13 fabrics that I had found, but I put a call out on this board for people who wanted to trade bug fabrics and I got an OVERWHELMING response! :)

This is machine pieced and machine quilted. It is a big twin size.

I'm trying to turn over a new leaf and not point out all the flaws in my quilts so I will not say anything negative about the quilt, but I will say this...FMQ is NOT my forte! That is why I hand quilt...because I'm better at it and it's "easier"...ie, I don't like fighting with the quilt to get it through the arm in my machine. My machine must have a REALLY small opening because it's all I can do to get quilts squished through it! :(

Along with the pieced blocks, I added some embroideries to the top before quilting it! :)

front...72 jars in all!

Really like your quilt. Have looked at the bug jar quilts often but haven't made one yet. Love the embroidery you added. Makes neat little hidden treasures on the quilt. Great job and thanks for sharing.

I used this pattern and tutorial:
http://bugjarquilt.blogspot.com/

However, instead of having them "floating" I didn't add the bottom piece and instead cut a 1.5" sashing to look like a bookcase shelf and then added a 2.5" border all the way around to look like the outside of the bookcase.

Hope this helps.

NikkiLu 01-10-2011 08:28 PM

Wonderful quilt! He will have so much fun looking inside of each jar!!!

Bluebonnet Sue 01-10-2011 10:27 PM

What a great quilt for a little boy. I'm sure he loves it & so do all his friends. They are so special when they are unique to the child. I did a smaller version, actually, I Spy jars a number of years ago for the grandchildren. The older ones are now 6,7,8 & 9, but the youngest is just over a year now so we are still enjoying this little quilt & learning colors, shapes & so much more. Love our time playing & snuggling with this special little quilt which stays at my house.

Iluv2quilt 01-10-2011 10:43 PM

I really like this quilt, it is marvelous - nice work on all of it!!

Gramof6 01-11-2011 12:50 AM

How perfect this is for any little guy! Your DGS will enjoy this for a very long time. Only you see mistakes or something not perfect because I think it is just perfect as it is. And I am with ya about preferring to handquilt. Takes so long but worth it in the end for me. Otherwise I am ready to toss it all out the window. Great job & good job on finishing it.

karen65ae 01-11-2011 02:31 AM

Love the bugs. Great idea your embroidery machine....

sewTinker 01-11-2011 02:42 AM

I get all excited when I run across Jar quilts. I have one in the collecting stage for my grandson who will be three this september. This is adorable. I love the little creatures you've added. (btw: I think using your machine for the fmq was a stroke of genius ~ it will help it pass the grandson test; and, maybe even, the greatGrandson test!)
