You made two of them? You must have unlimited patience! It is beautiful!

karenfae 12-20-2010 05:05 PM

I started the first one about 6 years ago I guess and finished quilting it and gave it to my oldest daughter a little over a year ago. This second one I started a little more than 2 1/2 years ago and now it will be put aside to hand quilt when the quilt on have on my frame comes off. (I have hand pieced both of these quilts and hand quilting is what I do.) this second quilt will go to my younger daughter.

SPECTACULAR!!!!!!  I have been trying to get up the courage to make a Dear Jane, but I guess I'm just too chicken-hearted. It is certainly on my "Bucket List" so maybe someday............

NikkiLu 12-20-2010 05:14 PM

Hand pieced AND hand quilted? Oh My Gosh! No WAY!

quiltlonger 12-20-2010 05:21 PM

That's quite an accomplishment. A lot of us have little hope of ever getting one Dear Jane finished. You did a great job.

just_the_scraps_m'am 12-20-2010 05:28 PM

ooohhh! absolutely LOVE that AND the first one in your avatar! So do BOTH of them have identical blocks???

Pamela Artman 12-20-2010 05:29 PM

absolutely gorgeous!! I am making a dear jane quilt, but progress has been slow. After the holidays, I'm going to get it out again and start working on it. You've inspired me!!!

donnaree59 12-20-2010 05:30 PM

Oh my! That is beautiful. I know both of your daughters will cherish them forever.

bj 12-20-2010 05:30 PM

I have a feeling the title is very appropriate, but you did a beautiful job! I really like the 2 color blocks! :-D :-D

luvspaper 12-20-2010 05:31 PM

WoW! Great job! Love the red and white aspect a lot!

Congrats -- I can't imagine one much less two!

karenfae 12-20-2010 05:32 PM

most of the blocks are identical but I did change things up a little bit in how I cut the pieces. Also the way I did them is somewhat different - I did more applique and reverse applique on this second one then I did on the first - live and learn - I did this second one in 2 years and 8 months (382 hours) while the first one took 3 years and 3 months (490 hours)
The only reason it took so many years to complete is because I am constantly working on other projects at the same time.
Anyone can do a Dear Jane - just do not expect to do it in a flash! :)
The first Dear Jane I did I called "Insanity" so only appropriate that this one is "Insanity Revisited" and no there won't be a 3rd - 2 is enough for anyone!

mamaw 12-20-2010 05:33 PM

Wow, I am amazed that you did 2 ..... Great job

bjnicholson 12-20-2010 05:35 PM

What is a Dear Jane quilt and why does it take so long?

edited to add: Beautiful quilts BTW!

just_the_scraps_m'am 12-20-2010 05:41 PM

i've looked at the book & found it WAY overwhelming, so my hat is definitely off to you!

do you favor one more than the other and WHY?

karenfae 12-20-2010 06:05 PM

what is a Dear Jane - it is a replica of a quilt made in 1864. It is comprised of 169 different 4 1/2 inch blocks - each different from the other. There are also 52 pieced triangles in it and 4 corners- again all different from each other. Some of these blocks have over 40 pieces in them, some of the corners have over 70 pieces in them. The book comes with the patterns but no instructions - you figure it out yourself. A lot of people hand piece these as the original was and a lot of us hand quilt them also - why make it - because of the challenge I guess

karenfae 12-20-2010 06:06 PM

Right now I do not know if I favor one over the other - I love all the multitude of colors I used in the scrappy first version - but yet I love the two way color combine of the red batik I used with the buttercream batik

UglyCook 12-20-2010 06:08 PM

I can't begin to imagine....but it sure is beautiful!

dellareya 12-20-2010 07:29 PM

Gina_D 12-20-2010 08:50 PM

That looks incredibly tedious & complicated - but what a great quilt! Bet you're glad to be done with it. I admire your talents.

My hat is off to you! They are both just beautiful! I'm just a few tris and the kites from finishing my DJ. Then the quilting begins!
