What a beautiful quilt and beautiful hand quilting!!

SouthPStitches 02-25-2012 03:22 PM

Well done, happy looking quilt. Your hand quilting is wonderful. I too machine piece and mostly hand quilt (in my lap versus a frame). I think something can be said about how nice a handquilted article drapes. Keep up the great work.

I think it's fabulous!

You did a lovely job on this quilt. Love the wrinkled look (that what I call it) It will surely be loved. Wish I could hand quilt, but thumbs start throbbing if I hand sew too long. Yours sure is nice.

I agree with this opinion! You did a fabulous job on this. I love to hand quilt in my lap also. I just concentrate on getting the stitches to look the same as each other from the front. I have decided to not care about the backs so much, as long as I don't get any pleats, and I don't when I spray baste. Also, I am content to take just one stitch at a time! I have accepted that handquilting over seams is a bad idea, and generally keep my lines within a piece. I also sometimes have both handquilting and machine quilting in the same little quilt -- they are mine and I make the rules!

What a beautiful quilt and your stitching is very nice; my last hand quilted one was "crinkled" after washing, too. I think it adds to the "uniqueness". Thanks for sharing.

rachelg 02-29-2012 04:28 PM

I just wanted to thank everyone once again. I am very thankful for your compliments. I have done a handful of quilts...all but two are handquilted. And those two were lapquilts and I just did straight lines for the quilting. I don't have a machine that will do machine quilting. (Hoping to get a nice machine soon...going to check out some past threads.) I want to learn to machine quilt but I know my love will always be handquilting. I second guess myself all the time. I don't know anyone who quilts and the ones I have seen at the small quilt show that comes to my area are SO perfect....or very old. My back never looks like the front. I suppose it is practice. I will say that my stitches improved with this quilt. I fretted so much about the design of the handquilting and how to get it done. Don't know if I did 'right' or not, but I wound up with a stencil (18x8 inches) and one of those invisible pens and went to town doing a small section at a time. So how does everyone else do it?? I am sandwiching one for my son tonight and will hand stitch in the ditch for it. We'll see how it comes out.

You are all so wonderful. What a happy place this board is.

Rachel

Sorry to disagree with you ("I consider myself much the novice. ") but IMHO, you have advanced past novice.
