Finished Quilt for my niece...handquilited.

Hi everyone....I have only posted a few times. But I lurk a lot and have been inspired so many times by you all. And I have come here hundreds of times for tips and knowledge. I started this quilt almost two years ago when my niece was born, but family illness kept it at bay for a bit. I consider myself much the novice. I mostly machine piece and handquilt (in my lap). I have years of practice ahead of me to be good...have been here so many times to see if I was 'doing it right'. This quilt was quilted using Warm and Natural (and based on threads I've read, I will be trying different battings next time). I have trouble going through seams and my stitching on the back does not look like the front-it seems much smaller. A lot of mistakes here, but I LOVE how it turned out over all....love the crinkled, vintage look. Which I will admit, the quilt looked a little like that before I washed it (is that normal?). Anyway the fabric is Odyssea by Moda. Made from charm packs (even the binding). Thanks so much for looking and any advice! Oh and I use a 10 or 11 between. (please overlook the lint on the red piece....)

It's lovely...and there's nothing like hand quilting, which shouldn't be perfect anyway! I wish I could do it. I love that crinkly look also. Terrific fabric too! Keep coming back!

Your stitching is BEAUTIFUL!!!! It is soooo cute and perfect!

I love warm & natural for the 10 yrs I've been quilting - it's all i've every used. I wouldn't mind using hobbs, but i do want 100% cotton.

And yes, seams always seem to be a pistol to go thru.

Your quilt looks fabulous. The quilting looks very good. Just think what you will be like in a few more quilts? Very Very pretty.

I love the choice of colors. Handquilting is something I do not have the patience for, and I admire those who do it. This is such a beautiful little quilt. Thanks for sharing. You inspire me!

If you are enjoying the process and the product, that's all that matters. In this case, the quilt brings a smile to MY face. If you DO want to learn more complex methods, ask and you will be given help. By the way, we like to see everyone's work here. I decided long since that while I enjoy hand embroidery and applique, hand quilting is not my thing. I enjoy trying new challenges, a well as quick and simple quilts. I certainly would not want to discourage others who don't agree on those points. Please be embolded to share ALL of your work.

You are FAR too modest, quilt is beautiful, AND do love hand quilting the best by far, looks more comfy that dead flat machine done.
W/natural is very diificult to hand quilt I find so therefore use Hobbs polydown ,much easier but sadly manmade.

QuiltingCrazie 02-25-2012 03:34 AM

beautiful quilt!!! Quilting looks great way better then my first handquilted quilt. I have always used warm and natural as well. I can tell you why its crinkly before the wash, I handquilted a quilt once just sitting and I had the same effect which is not bad but it was there. I was taught to lay it on a table and hand quilt that way but I just wanted to sit on the couch lol. It does make a difference the quilts I have layed on the table and quilted are flat no puckers if I sit on the couch I use a hoop. In the end it's yours and there is not right or wrong. Thought I'd share my experience. Great quilt tho I love moda fabrics!! Enjoy your hard work!

rubyred 02-25-2012 06:37 AM

Warm and nutural is not for hand quilting i found out for my self.I use hobb 80/20.That is all I use now when I hand quilt.

Dyan 02-25-2012 06:52 AM

Beautiful quilt, I hand lap quilt too, but my stitches are not as nice as yours. Good Job!

The hand quilting looks amazing. I will try that one day, I swear...I just love the crinkly look! Beautiful quilt : )

rachelg 02-25-2012 08:23 AM

oh my gosh, everyone. I am overwhelmed with your kind words. You have no idea how many times I looked up 'rocking stitch' or watched a video. Or looked at the beautiful quilts here. I seem to second guess a lot. Thank you very, very much for your compliments, encouragement, and advice. I do have a nice lap hoop and have tried using it many times, but I just can't get comfortable with it. I am getting ready to start quilting one for my youngest son (almost 16)...but I need to order white batting. I live in a coastal area and only have Walmart for selection. I will stitch in the ditch this time. I have a blog of my quilts, but it needs to be updated. When I get that done, I will post the link here. You are all wonderful!
