This is what I've been working on. It's going to be a secret pals christmas gift. Any Ideas on quilting will be appreciated. I think an all over quilting will take away from the blocks...any ideas???

clem55 06-28-2010 11:48 AM

that is really pretty, but I can"t make any suggestions about quilting, I've only done SID and outline myself..

Pineapple Princess 06-28-2010 11:55 AM

Beautiful! Sorry, I have no idea how to quilt that...

nwm50 06-28-2010 11:57 AM

Love, Love the colors & pattern!! Lucky secret pal !

MaryStoaks 06-28-2010 12:08 PM

absolutely beautiful! The colors remind me of 1930s quilts.

Candace 06-28-2010 12:09 PM

Beautiful! As for quilting..maybe feathered wreaths?

paintedquilt 06-28-2010 12:10 PM

Beautiful!

That is a very nice quilt and your secret pal should be thrilled when Santa comes.
Are you using a whole cloth backing? It would be unique if you stitch in the ditch around each center square and windmill square in the blocks then around each side of the complete block(s). What thoughts have you had about it?

It will be whole cloth on back...I am leaning towards the SID idea to make the blocks stand out. I love the feathered wreath idea but there is no way I would try that on this quilt. I've tried them on a pratice quilt before and they were not to pretty.

I done this a week ago...might try something like this.

Wow!!! What a great job. Sorry I have no ideas. I'm sure whatever you decide will just add to the beauty of your quilt.

Dix 06-28-2010 12:49 PM

This one would be fun to hand quilt, if you do that. I like to and just have to see a pattern emerge for me. I would cross hatch the center reds and 1/4 inch for the 1/2 triangles and a long easy pattern for the long pieces.

ranger 06-28-2010 12:49 PM

That's pretty. I like the colors.

littlehud 06-28-2010 02:30 PM

I would SID most of it and put a beautiful design in the solid centers. Great job.

rootyr 06-28-2010 02:30 PM

It's a beauty!

dgmoby 06-29-2010 03:15 AM

This is very pretty! Your idea for quilting will also be very pretty on this quilt. The other one you did is very nice!

Just a thought: Have you ever considered purchasing a stencil for blocks, then marking the blocks, and quilting that? It's an easy way to get a lovely pattern, and makes it very easy to follow the lines for the quilting. Many longarmers do this for the quilting motifs, but it can be just as easily done on a regular machine.

Good luck - and would love to see what you choose!

I have seen the stencil and they are pretty,I think the stencil would be easier for me than freehand..my daughter and I have a frame with a Juki machine on it but I'm not good at anything but all over designs...still learning. :)

Very lucky person receiving this quilt! Love the colors and the blocks are great! Picking quilting designs is definitely not my forte, I have to always ask someone else.

Justquilting 06-29-2010 04:47 AM

This is so beatiful! I am always amazed at the wonderful color combinations I see in the quilts on this board. I always thought I had a fairly good eye for color -- until I started quilting. Sometimes things come together, but mostly I struggle with what fabrics to use. I really like this quilt -- it's got the colors of Christmas but it doesn't "scream" the holidays. It'll be wonderful all year long. I am really envious!! REALLY nice work!

Thanks for the compliment....I have always worked with color in my paintings...but this quilting is completly different, but lots more fun.

acesgame 06-30-2010 09:08 AM

The solid centers are screaming for a recognizable shape like a star or a fan (I think a fan would go with the girly/flowery color choices well and make it more victorian looking). I saw where a lady had hand quilted circles over her pinwheels and it gave them a nice sense of movement. I think a simple scallop around the edges would also give it flair without being as hard as the feather motif. Everything else would just be in the ditch so as not to take away from the softness created with the other ideas. I love cross-hatching but it would be too sharp with the other curves. Just my two cents! Good luck and let us know what you decide.

mayday 06-30-2010 09:58 AM

lucky pal! hand quilt in fairly apart circles using plates--charger/ salad/side/mug shouldn't then upset the quilt pattern.
OR merely tie.
