Hi

I finished the quilt for my new granddaughter by marriage in November, welcoming her to our family. She wanted one that was similar to the one I made my other granddaughter a couple of years ago, including the satin binding in a package.

Got to stitching the end and beginning of binding together, cut, 'snapped' and ... horrors... the cut raw edge was on the outside instead of hidden in the seam. Shoot, I've never done that before! My solution was to use a decorative stitch to cover the raw edges, front and back but it created a very visible 'triangle'. I realize that Kalie won't know that it isn't supposed to look like that but boy do I feel dumb.

Now I'm wondering if I should use a pigma pen to write her name in the 'triangle' but afraid it might bleed/spread on the satin. I'll have to try it out on a left over piece of satin.

You covered it well! Beautiful job. How about an applique of her name instead or risking the pen? Or a decorative stitch?

Butterflyblue 10-21-2010 01:33 PM

What a cute quilt! I'm sure she will love it. If the pigma pen won't work, perhaps you can embroider her initials in it, or something like that.

ktbb 10-21-2010 01:33 PM

why not use the same decorative stitch and make a few other triangles in the satin? oddly spaced, maybe, and turn the "mistake" into a design element.

aorlflood 10-21-2010 01:33 PM

I think I'd leave it as it is...don't do anything else to it.

I think it adds "interest" and if you don't say anything about how/why it is there, no one will even know that it is "isn't" supposed to be there.

That's my 2 cents worth anyway...

deema 10-21-2010 01:34 PM

It's beautiful! She will love it and never notice. IF she does, tell her it's like a "birth mark" to make her special quilt unique. ;)

That would be my idea also

ckcowl 10-21-2010 01:54 PM

very cute! and a great fix!!!
if you use a pigma pen it shouldn't bleed on the fabric.

wolph33 10-21-2010 01:56 PM

that is an awesome quilt

wraez 10-21-2010 01:56 PM

Oh, that 'birthmark' comment made me almost spit out my coffee! Thanks for the chuckle.

Hmmmm, maybe adding some more triangles would work, but not too many, ... thinking about it.

thanks for all the suggestions and nice comments.

YOu can say it is a representation of a new family. That all three come together to make a family!!

CompulsiveQuilter 10-21-2010 02:02 PM

If you ask me, writing in the triangle would make it more of an oddball twist. I think you've been very creative in fixing it; it looks like you did in on purpose already!

Susy 10-21-2010 02:05 PM

That is just so cute and bright, she will love it.

laceybritt 10-21-2010 02:17 PM

Beautiful quilt and you did a very professional cover up of the boo boo!!!

Lady Shivesa 10-21-2010 02:18 PM

Awww, you did a LOVELY job of covering up that little tiny mistake. :) I second (or third, or fourth) the idea of adding a few more ones somewhere if you really aren't happy with it...but honestly, it looks great as is. :)

butterflywing 10-21-2010 02:40 PM

i think it gives the quilt personality and makes it individually hers.
what i would be concerned about is wether is not the satin binding would fray between the stitches when it gets washed. maybe covering it would be a safer bet, with the same satin binding. how about wrapping it around the folded edge to cover the triangle completely? it would still be very much her own 'special' quilt.

carolaug 10-21-2010 02:47 PM

I think it looks wonderful!!!

hmmm, hadn't thought about the fraying. I'll give this some thought, and may use your recommendation. Thank you.

Very pretty, tell her the triangle is your special mark for her quilt and just add a triangle to any other quilts you make her in the future.

Ditter43 10-21-2010 03:55 PM

I would do the name in purple, in the pink section of binding right above your V repair. Just a thought! Love the quilt! :-D

wraez 10-21-2010 03:56 PM

Jingleberry I like that idea!

I owe her a Christmas quilt too but probably not this year. I have lots of Halloween blocks to make for my 5 grandkids, I like your idea of a special mark for each one. Too bad I didn't think of it for their past quilts.

It sounds like a perfect solution!

Bubblegum0077 10-21-2010 04:00 PM

Very nice, colorful and bright. What a nice gift. I wouldn't say anything about your mishap. I would not use the pen on satin. Will bleed. Maybe some embroyidered letters or if you machine can do that I would do her name.

That's what I was thinking. Love the quilt!

Me too....or maybe do a satin label with her name and applique it over the top. Anyway, whatever you decide - it's beautiful.

miss_ticky2 10-21-2010 04:29 PM

What a lovely bright quilt. :)

Jim's Gem 10-21-2010 04:34 PM

Pretty quilt!!!

Great job of covering your "mistake"

I'm with some of the others and think it would look nice if you added a couple random triangles elsewhere.

Friendly Quilter 10-21-2010 05:35 PM

She will never notice, the quilt is lovely, she is going to love it.

littlehud 10-21-2010 06:30 PM

That is a beautiful quilt. I love all the blocks and the she will never know the binding wasn't supposed to be that way. Great job and thanks for sharing.

great idea!!!

franie 10-21-2010 06:56 PM

You did good. It looks great. She will love it!

mrs. fitz 10-21-2010 07:56 PM

Someone early on suggested just what I thought of when I saw the picture of your "mistake" (which looks like a decorative detail) --- replicate the same stitching at a few random spots along the border. It's a really cute quilt. Katie will love it.

Spring 10-21-2010 09:47 PM

great job. Very creative way to fix the mistake. Im sure she will love it.

Gerbie 10-21-2010 10:45 PM

Suggestion, make the same design on the other side of the quilt, maybe three to a side and one on each end. Noone but you will ever know, except for this board and we won't tell.

quiltmom04 10-22-2010 04:55 AM

Here's another one - I finshed quilting a quilt with a plain backing, (like Kona, I think) and when I got it finished, I saw that the seam to piece the bak together was exposed instead of inside. I was horrified. So I just cut a small piece and hand stitched it overtop of the exposed seam. Not sure if anyone who didn't quilt realized the mistake, but now I check and DOUBLE check the way I sandwich BEFORE I quilt!

sandpat 10-22-2010 05:37 AM

Oh...never mind the little mistake...love the quilt!

klgreene 10-22-2010 08:50 AM

I would leave it as it is. She will never know, and I think it looks perfectly fine. If you try to do more around he edges, you may not like that. I'd embroidery an initial or her name if you can. But I don't think it needs a thing. Really cute quilt.

amma 10-22-2010 01:29 PM

Hello and Welcome to the board :D:D:D

I love that little triangle! I would repeat it randomly along the rest of the binding!
Your quilt is very pretty, I really like those fabrics :D:D:D

sash 10-22-2010 04:01 PM

It's a beautiful quilt. I would just leave it.

eimay 10-22-2010 05:38 PM

Really cut quilt!!
