I posted a picture of a couch that I quilted several years ago. http://www.quiltingboard.com/pictures-f5/yes-i-quilted-my-whole-da-darned-couch-t101503.html It is still my favorite but since I sold it, I needed to replace it. I purchased a used couch from Craig’s list. Very clean and quite serviceable just as it was, but too soft for my taste so I knew I’d have some work to do. All the quilting and piecing was done on my Juki DMS. My shoulders have the aches to prove it…

I put out a request to family members that do quilting for all their scraps that they could spare and I got some truly beautiful scraps! This project took me over 6 months from start to finish. I do love a challenge, so I chose a pattern that was beyond my skill set. I cheaped out by trying to make my own paper piecing pattern. That was not a good idea. By the time I finished it, I really hated it. The quilt has more ‘issues’ than I care to admit….things like pointless stars, and suns that don’t meet properly in the center a truly bad choice for the backing (pieced flannel scraps). But for all that, I’m starting to love it again now that it’s finished.
I'm sorry for posting so many photos, but this project used up all of my time for a long time....I have not been on the board for a while because every spare moment has been dedicated to finishing That Da#%$^ed Quilt

dilyn, you are amazing. If there are imperfections in your piecing and quilting, I am sure only you can see it. I love the colors, patterns and all of your effort to endeavor this project done. Congratulations!:thumbup::thumbup:

Beautiful. You are very talented and inspirational. My couch could use some help like that.

Cedar 05-01-2014 01:54 PM

Wow! I currently keep a quilt on my couch because I tried to wash the cushion covers and they exploded at the seams. Your memory foam replacement is really interesting. Was the foam expensive?

pjnesler 05-01-2014 02:16 PM

Wow - I had no idea I'd ever see a couch conversion on this site - what a creative mind you have, I love it!

GrammaNan 05-01-2014 04:14 PM

Incredible!

EvelynJ 05-01-2014 04:23 PM

Dang....I want to come to your house for a sleep over! This is an awfully labor intensive project but the results are more than worth the effort. Congratulations!!

I have never seen such a dramatic before and after project. Stunning.

gabeway 05-02-2014 04:35 AM

I can see where six months went to! But it was well worth the effort! Absolutely beautiful!

Gerbie 05-02-2014 05:04 AM

Absolutely fantastic. I would NEVER tackle a job like that. You did great!! Don't put your self down for not having everything in your quilt just as I assume you normally do from looking at your work, after all you named the quilt Fire and Ice- well ice melts and fire burns, both elements changing things as they perform their process, so you can always say the fire burned the tip off or the ice melted the corner etc. You are really great with just the idea of doing a makeover of a sofa. I have refinished wooden furniture pieces, but would not tackle something like you did. Beautiful job there!!! Your Hubby did a great job on the emb.

cpower 05-02-2014 05:19 AM

BuzzinBumble 05-02-2014 07:24 AM

I remember your couch from last time and think you are amazing! I don't see any of the goofs you speak of - your Fire and Ice quilt looks great! The quilting you did really enhanced the whole project.

MargeD 05-02-2014 09:09 AM

WOW, what an amazing effort, the sofa and the quilt. My hats off to you for attempting and succeeding at this project.

Chasing Hawk 05-02-2014 10:14 AM

Oh my gosh! BEAUTIFUL WORK!

You have given me a great idea! I am going to do this to our sofa.

Not the whole quilting idea, but replacing the cushions with one piece of memory foam and a nice slipcover!

IrishgalfromNJ 05-02-2014 11:43 AM

What a great project. I love the end result. So interesting.

justflyingin 05-03-2014 04:00 AM

You did an amazing job! Congratulations on a job well done! I can see why it was all consuming!
