First charity quilt finished

2 Attachment(s)
This is my first donation quilt for the guild I joined last fall. I posted a picture of the FMQ'ing on the back to encourage those of you hesitant to try. It's not even close to perfect, but the wonky-ness of it matches the theme fabric, so it works. It felt really good to hand it over yesterday.

ManiacQuilter2 06-21-2015 06:51 AM

Colors are really nice. I tried to use the best fabric and batting that I can afford for my charity quilt. You want to donate a quilt that you would also be pleased to receive. Try to remember to never stop on a curve. Kind of hard with this cute quilting design.

LoriEl 06-21-2015 06:52 AM

Great job! I love the colors you chose.

QuiltnNan 06-21-2015 07:01 AM

I think its done very nice.........nice colors

Monale 06-21-2015 07:22 AM

Love your quilt! And thanks for posting the picture of the FMQ'ing! I've just done my first trial piece of FMQ and can really appreciate now how hard it is... Your picture encourages me to not wait to try on a "real" quilt until I think it looks perfect (because that day may never come...). Looking at your quilt as a whole, it doesn't seem to matter all that much!

daisydebby 06-21-2015 07:42 AM

You did a great job. You'll get smoother with practice. Love your quilt and colors, too:)

red-warrior 06-21-2015 07:47 AM

Very nice quilt and thanks for the encouragement on quilting! You are right it looks great when in with the patterns!

FabStripper 06-21-2015 07:48 AM

I really like the bright colours of your quilt and the quilting is whimsical and fun. Thank you for encouraging those of us that are nervous to try new patterns like this for FMQ. I can almost see you doing this. Thank you for the lesson. I know the person that is chosen to love your quilt will treasure this.

Great job on the quilting and love your fabric choices!

paintmejudy 06-21-2015 08:55 AM

fay, this is a beautiful quilt. and your FMQ is nice. One suggestion I would make if you aren't doing it, is to use the needle down feature if you have it on your machine, so that when you stop your fabric won't move or jump around. And most of all, remember to breathe!!!

I too sew for charity, and make about 150-200 a year. I think my free motion has improved by the charity quilting because I just go for it!

lynnie 06-21-2015 09:00 AM

great quilt, I love the colors and the quilting

I bought this material years ago at JoAnn's for my DGD who did not like it, so it sat, unused and unloved. Now, hopefully it will be loved by someone. The best advice I got for stopping and restarting was to "needle up," move a space and start there. It seemed to help. The jerky spots are from several contributors such as failure to "puddle" the quilt, stopping to remove pins, cats sitting on the quilt, and failure to plan my path of travel before I came out of a spiral.

I love it and thanks for sharing your FMQ! It looks good. I feel that I learn something from each one that I do. And such a feeling of accomplishment. Good for you!

That is a darling quilt. I thank you for giving us amateurs encouragement about our FMQ.

cherrio 06-23-2015 03:20 AM

Love ur color choices and yay for jumping over the fear of FM Quilting! I am working on it.

carolynjo 06-23-2015 04:29 AM

Thank you for sharing! So many people get discouraged doing FMQ. My reply is to jump in and keep trying. It takes a while for brain/muscle memory to kick in, but if you don't try, you gain nothing. You did a good job. You'll only get better.

nwm50 06-23-2015 04:58 AM

I'm clapping for you!! Very nicely done and it will be received with lots of admiration and love for it!!

EmiliasNana 06-23-2015 05:08 AM

Great Job! I am one to just jump in too. I had done simple FMQ on my DM, so felt I had some experience when I got my mid-arm. I did one "sampler" on muslin and was so bored, I decided to try baby quilts for charity. Panels are a great way to start and follow the lines. Once you outline the shapes, then fill in with different quilting motifs and you have lots of practice and it is soooooo much more fun.

Quilter 65 06-23-2015 05:38 AM

Love those colors and pattern.

Yooper32 06-23-2015 05:56 AM

Luscious colors and if it were mine, I would be hard-pressed to give it up.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments and the encouragement!

GrammieJan 06-23-2015 08:09 AM

Good job, faygilgore! I wish I had enough "Can do" attitude to try FMQ like you. I liked the back side of your quilting, it reminds me of a pan of cinnamon rolls and it just tickles my fancy! Thanks for sharing.
