First quilt art piece

1 Attachment(s)
This is my first quilt art project. How would you quilt this piece?
The bottom is watercolor pencils and glitter on dark blue cotton. The appliquéd moon has oil paint
to give a blue moon look. I am going to quilt the appliquéd bird to give a more feathered look just
can't figure out how to quilt the background. I hope the picture shows in the dark places.
Thanks for any help you can give. Mia<object type="cosymantecnisbfw" cotype="cs" id="SILOBFWOBJECTID" style="width: 0px; height: 0px; display: block;"></object>

I've never done an art quilt so I don't think I'll be much help. Maybe quilt small stars in the sky area with dark thread to match you fabric. What about doing some thread painting in some areas, like the trees ... if you don't think the glitter will get into your machine. You did a lovely job.

I would do puffs of clouds in the sky with matching thread. Then stitch the outline of the bird and a few accent lines of feathers with a matching thread. Outline the trees and the cabin and the sliding of the mountainside with background matching thread. I always keep it minimal. Very beautiful quilt.

I just want to say it's beautiful. I am not sure about the quilting part since I'm more of a "straight liner"

oksewglad 11-07-2015 02:00 PM

Very lovely...Maniac has some good advice.

lynnie 11-07-2015 02:26 PM

very pretty, how about rays from the stars

SewExtremeSeams 11-07-2015 03:07 PM

Mia, your art quilt is gorgeous. What a great start. Can't wait to see what you end up doing. Several of the suggestions would be good to use.

Very nice quilt. i think the others gave you great ideas.

mucky 11-07-2015 04:37 PM

Maybe follow the deign ones that lead down to the houses

playswithcolor 11-07-2015 04:47 PM

Hmm, maybe be daring and try glow in the dark thread on the bird for the feather details?

How about small swirls with long tails in the sky area similar to the classic "starry Night" painting?

tatavw01 11-07-2015 05:15 PM

Beautiful!! Great job

I just took a watercolor class again after many years but I am sure not ready to tackle something like this. You did a wonderful job. I would put some rays into the sky for sure. Please post again after you have finished quilting. Thanks for showing us.

This is neat! :)

I like maniac's advice. Make a copy and practice on your paper copy first.

BrendaK 11-08-2015 11:35 AM

Can't wait to see the finished project. What you have done so far is stunning and I know that when you are finished it will AWESOME. BrendaK

Brilliantly done. I would second Maniac's advice, or quilt with dark invisible thread everywhere except the bird, light there. Minimal quilting.

Beautiful piece. Outstanding job.

rosiewell 11-09-2015 10:30 AM

it's an incredible quilt, I love the little houses at the bottom! I would do glittering stars in the sky,

klswift 11-09-2015 10:57 AM

I agree that your quilting should continue the feel of the art piece. Almost straight lines down the mountains, echo outline the houses, branch the trees, do cloud work in the sky and a bit off a wavy feather look on the bird. The main look should follow the element it is in and enhance it. This is nice work for anyone, that this is your first piece is fantastic.

Haven't done an art quilt yet, but yours is beautiful. Would you share with us where you got your pattern? I have an art quilt on my bucket list!!

Very lovely quilt - the moon is always a great subject, as are our feathered friends.

berthah 11-09-2015 02:31 PM

Hi,as far as art quilts go I am strictly a looker so I would not have any idea how to start quilting but hey stunning and elegant are descriptions that spring to mind

twinkie 11-10-2015 02:30 AM

I agree with ManiacQuilter for the most part. Not sure about the cloud puffs but she is right on about the other quilting. You did a great job.

annette1952 11-10-2015 11:58 AM

Beautiful quilt!

mjhaess 11-11-2015 07:16 AM

That is just lovely..Great job !!!!

#1piecemaker 11-11-2015 07:27 AM

Maybe just some stippling for the background. If its a wallhanging, it will give it some body and let the bird and moom stand out more.

gramquilter2 11-11-2015 01:03 PM

That is a beautiful piece of art.

QuiltnNan 11-13-2015 04:56 AM
