Top done and backing chosen, just not quilted yet. My colors were fall choices. I think very nice as its my favorite time of the year. I appliqued some fall leaves in the border also.

Yes, I did use batting. I tried silk, just to see how it worked, and also because it is very light weight, and the quilt top is extra heavy because of the foundation.

OK, here's a closeup of the quilting. Like I said, it's not as smooth as it could be .... but I tried!

[quote=cat-on-a-mac]I did my first foundation-pieced quilt using a diamond pattern. Actually, I found the fabric for the border (a Laurel Burch design) and had to come up with a quilt to match! After I finished piecing the top, I took a free-motion quilting class, so I took the plunge and did a swirly pattern for the quilting with variegated thread. Some of swirls aren't very "smooth", but overall it came out OK. Instructor recommended choosing busy pattern for backing, so that your quilting mistakes aren't as obvious ... so I did![/quote

That is really neat ...I've beem saving strings...is there a patttern for it...thanks,,,SG

wraez 07-11-2010 06:11 PM

Love string quilts and your fabrics are so nice and bright, the backing is just perfect.

Don't you find that making string blocks just soothes the soul, relieves stress and makes a great quilt?

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA ... who loves to make string quilts on fabric foundation, not paper, hating to remove those paper bits.
