Flat Stanley came to Texas!

4 Attachment(s)
My Great niece sent me her Flat Stanley a few weeks ago. Many students will do this project at some point between 3rd and 5th grades. Flat Stanley is a paper doll that the students color and mail to far away places to learn about his adventures.

I decided that I needed to document Stanley's trip to Texas with a quilt for my great niece. I scanned a picture of Flat Stanley to be prominently placed on the quilt. I added 4 pieced cowboy boots and several pictures of what Stanley did while here. Finally got the label sewed on tonight so I can mail it to her this weekend.

How cute. Wish I had thought of this when my grandson was doing it.

what a beautiful idea and the memories that go with it.

QuiltnNan 06-05-2014 02:23 AM

a very clever design... she should be thrilled

Very cute idea and quilt!

brod71 06-05-2014 03:13 AM

Oh my what a super adorable quilt!

Evy 06-05-2014 04:06 AM

I also wish I'd thought of that. We've done 4 Flat People so far and have pictures of them climbing out of the mailbox, on tractors and all kind of things. One, Flat Ashley nearly got eaten by the dog when I was trying to get a photo of her with the pups. We have two grandkids to go that haven't gotten to the Flat Stanley grades and I'll remember the quilt one with them. I have a ball when a Flat Person arrives. My daughter told me that some children never get their Flat Person back. Seems no one wants to be bothered and that just blows my mind.

I love that you embraced flat Stanley's visit and made the really cute quilt she will love it.

Evy that made me sad, while its not necessary to do what PlanoDebbie did but damn how hard is it to take a picture or two write a letter and send it back? Flat people are not a thing here, If I ever get the chance to host a flat person I hope that I remember this quilt.

Yooper32 06-05-2014 04:27 AM

What a great "memory" you have given her.

Quilter 65 06-05-2014 04:42 AM

I have never heard of Flat Stanley, but it looks like he had a boot scootin' time in Texas!

gabeway 06-05-2014 04:47 AM

Great idea!

omacookie 06-05-2014 05:29 AM

Flat Stanley is a great idea to get children to read and learn about other parts of the country. I ran a gift shop on a plantation and had many visits from Flat Stanley over the years. I was even in some of the photos !

northern lass 06-05-2014 05:36 AM

Great quilt

mtkoldra 06-05-2014 05:59 AM

we took our DGD flat Stanley on our trip to Europe, it was so much fun, at the airport, on the plain and then taking pictures where ever we went
love your quilt

Doggramma 06-05-2014 06:44 AM

Wow, that Flat Stanley sure has been decked out! Cute quilt. My middle-school age daughter didn't have a Flat Stanley but there was a teddy bear that got sent around for people to embellish it with something (a button or badge or jewelry) and send it along. He got lost shortly after he hit my aunt in Dallas. He was eventually found but it was way after the class project was over. I think that is so rude of people to not move it along.

paintmejudy 06-05-2014 07:01 AM

what a sweet and thoughtful gift.

luvstoquilt 06-05-2014 07:16 AM

What a great idea! Flat Stanley came to visit us when my DGD was in 3rd grade (she is now a college grad) and we took him all over the place. Up until now I have felt we did the best job but you beat me hands down!

RedGarnet222 06-05-2014 07:20 AM

Oh my! I have never heard of the flat Stanley either. What an adorable idea you have to make him into a quilt! The little one will just be tickled that you went to these extremes for them!

Normabeth 06-05-2014 07:27 AM

This is adorable - what a keep-sake to have.

sandyfullmer 06-05-2014 08:00 AM

What a great idea and a wonderful gift for her! I had never heard of Flat Stanley before.

nena 06-05-2014 08:03 AM

What a great idea. She will always have the quilt to remember this time in her life. It will be a story told for years to come.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 06-05-2014 08:11 AM

My friend is a 3rd grade teacher. She sends her personal Flat Stanley with her husband every year that is an over the road truck drive. Stanley skypes in to her classroom on Friday afternoons whenever he can. The kids love it.

It's a great project. I agree that it is sad so many people won't participate.

Judith1005 06-05-2014 08:18 AM

This is an awesome idea. I think I will bookmark it. Good idea if they are still doing this when my grandson gets older. Great Auntie, your great niece is going to be the hit of the classroom.! :)

Prim Quilts 06-05-2014 11:10 AM

Ellie377073 06-05-2014 05:00 PM

Marvelous quilt. You have encouraged your great niece in her educational activities. How considerate and kind. You must be a fabulous person to help out like this!

I love the Flat Stanley Quilt. Wish I had thought of that when Flat Stanley came to visit me. I took him to New York City. Wish he could have carried me cause my feet and legs when about to fall off by the third day of walking NYC. But we had a blast. So much to see. But I have three grands yet to do Flat Stanley so we shall see if he comes this way again.

twinkie 06-06-2014 02:26 AM

What a great idea and great quilt.

jeanneb52 06-06-2014 04:00 AM

Flat Stanley has been in our family for years...He goes everywhere with someone. He's gone to every wedding, christening, vacations and an occasion funeral. In fact he was buried with one family member who just thought the world of him. Great travelling companion, no matter where you're going. LOL
Glad to see him on a quilt! Bravo!

southernmema 06-06-2014 04:17 AM

Way too cute!!!

WMUTeach 06-06-2014 05:01 AM

How thoughtful of you to buy in to this project is such a delightful way. She will always remember her special year of "Flat Stanley".

cpcarolyn 06-06-2014 05:49 AM

Great idea. Good job.

liese 06-06-2014 06:00 AM

What a GREAT idea! Flat Stanley is adorably honored in your gorgeous quilt and your niece gets a beautiful quilt to remember her school year and the Flat Stanley adventure by! Kudos to you!

fangman 06-06-2014 06:12 AM

Your quilt is great.

I hope our grandkids get to do a Flat Stanley (or female equivalent). What a great learning experience! Speaking of great learning experiences: I still have the pen pal from Australia that I acquired in third grade (probably through Weekly Reader). We have corresponded over 54 years, and have probably met 8 times (7 times in the US and once in Australia). She and her husband made our trip to AU a much more meaningful experience. Talk about a lifetime of learning and fun! One never knows what a simple gesture can mean for a child.

I love flat stanley. I think the adults have more fun with him than the kids at our school. I was sad when it was over. My sister sent gifts to the whole class when he visited the Breakers in Palm Beach. My daughter took him all over NY and posted pictures with friends. It's a fun project. Love the quilt idea.
