Just finished this piece using a variety of real flowers you pound on to fabric to release the natural dyes in the leaves and petals. Lots of fun as a group project just need earplugs for the banging.

That really is beautiful! I'd love to try this, off to google! Bet it's really cathartic too, pounding the bejeepers out of some poor innocent flowers! LOL

Oh forgot to tell you to take the masking tape off as soon as you complete the hammering or it will ruin the piece. Moosegirl

Beautiful! I tried it once. It is fun. I want to try leaf printing again. How did you set the flower pounding?

Thanks for more detail. With flowers all year in Florida I think I might try it!

This is beautiful. I made a white linen shell type several years ago with the flower pounding on the front. I loved it. Have no clue what ever happend to it though. Probably a garage sale item..

Oh, it is wonderful!! I saw a demonstration of that on Simply Quilts one time. It was so intriguing.
|
Gorgeous!
Yet another technique...I like the sound of this one. |
My husband and the guys told me the only way I could quilt at hunting camp was if it involved something manly. I think the hammer pounding qualifies...don't you?

That turned out so pretty! I saw Georgia Bonesteel do a demo on her show a few months ago. I think she only used leaves. I have been wanting to try it. You have inspired me all over again to give it a whirl!!

I saw this technique done on Simply Quilts & it was so amazing! |
That is beautiful! Do you collect all the flowers and leaves and then arrange them and tape and then pound the heck out of the whole group at once?
|
Wow, thats awesome!
|
Very natural looking, pretty project!

One year in Bible School we did flower pounding. I made muslim totes - about 10" by 14" - and then had the kids slip magazines in the tote so when they pounded the flowers, it wouldn't bleed thru the fabric. I asked for church members to donate flowers and the use of their hammers. Some kids planned a design and some designs looked like weed gardens. But they had a ball! I think I had them lay a couple layers of papertowel over the flowers before pounding, and then had them iron the completed picture. This was a cheap and fun project!
|
Thats awesome!!!!! Do a toot...I mean a tut
|
I have seen that done on TV. Yours is much more prettier. Love it.
|
Wowzers....I love this! I am such a flower fanatic..was a floral designer. Now I can combine quilting with flowers. I can not wait to try this. Thank you so much for sharing this. Your work looks great!

There is a home made recipe to make the fixative. I did this years ago. I took my cutting board, fabric, paper towels and a hammer and went to town making noise. Even the neighbors came over to ask what was going on.
Mordant: Prepare an Alum bath (wearing gloves) 4 tablespoons of Alum 3 tablespoons of Cram of Tartar Both available at Health Food stores 20 cups of water. Add the cloth and heat on stove in low setting for 30 to 40 minutes. Leave the cloth in the mordant until the water is cold again. Rinse and dry, either on clothes line or in dryer. Now the fabric will retain the color of the fabrics. Store in a dark place, like a closet. After hammering, heat set with the iron. Is a lot of fun. |
oooooo that sure is pretty
|
Lovely!
|
I have seen this done on one of the quilting shows. This is the first one I have seen made though. Yours is beautiful.
|
HA HA HA I love this!
