I used heat and bond to hold down the pieces, then I did a satin stitch around the outside. The brown thread matched the fabric perfectly. When I was quilting, I used the same brown thread and fmq just inside of the satin stitching. You can't see this unless you have a magnifying glass, yet it holds the layers together.

edited: Forgot to ask what method you used to applique the horse. You can almost hear it's thundering hoofs.
