FMQ Playtime (Craftsy Class Homework)

1 Attachment(s)
Here's what I've been up to this morning... I started Cindy Needham's "Design It, Quilt It" class on Craftsy and here's my first homework assignment completed. It is supposed to show free-form use of lines, circles and s-curves. This piece is about 9" x 11" and done on my DSM (Juki TL 98 Q).

You did a great job. I am so afraid to try it. I do everything so tight and always have.

Impressive!!!
When I grow up, I want to do that. :)

I started a little over 3 years ago. Since I work full-time, I don't spend as much time at FMQ as I'd like, but it sure is fun! I started with a little experimentation, then one 3 hour class at a LQS, use of lots of resources on-line info and videos, books and DVDs including work by Leah Day, Karen McTavish, Sharon Schamber and now Cindy Needham. I've practiced too many hours to count and am still learning tons! My practice pieces the first several months were BAAAAAAAAD, but I was determined to learn and didn't give up. It's my experience that you have to be really committed to learning and practicing if you want to get good at FMQ. It's the most difficult thing I've learned in a long time!

You have done an awsome job.

You're welcome. I'm really enjoying so far. It starts out with some basics and about half way through, she gets into the actually designs.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!!!! Can you please translate DSM though. Sorry to say this, and I feel like I'm beginning the New Year with kind of a crabby start, but it honestly drives me crazy when things can't be spelled out.
Happy New Year to all!!!!!

"DSM" ~ domestic sewing machine. More specifically a Juki TL 98 Q as I stated in my post.

Wow! Wish I could do this after my classes. Must begin to practice more. This is awesome!

lallyann 01-01-2013 01:58 PM

I don't think you need a class! This is gorgeous and it seems you've already gotten the hang of it. Maybe I need to take that class!!

Brenda M 01-01-2013 02:01 PM

Beautiful work!

cjackaitlin 01-01-2013 02:54 PM

Looks like your an expert already, its beautiful.

debcavan 01-01-2013 03:27 PM

Even your homework is wonderful. Yes I took that class too. My friend could see a difference in the direction of my quilting. Mainly it taught me about breaking things down into small section when thinking about a project.

katier825 01-01-2013 04:00 PM

gorgeous! I have that class on my wish list...will have to wait for the next big sale.

Quilter 65 01-01-2013 04:06 PM

That is just beautiful!

Deb, You know that your experience from that class is what pushed me to actually sign up! I am absolutely LOVING it and can't wait to try out a bunch more stuff. Like for you, it is teaching me how to break things down and fit them all back together again. Until now, I hadn't really identified the "shadow" component of the designs that she talks about, but it's all beginning to make so much sense now! Shadows have been totally missing from my quilting, but no longer. I can't wait to do some more "homework", and then a real project using Cindy Needham's design techniques!

So Deb, what are you going to come up with next???

...I have to go buy some MORE thread now ('cause the 100's of spools I have are almost all 40 wt.)...:D

Your hrs. of practice and classes really shine on this piece. Keep sharing; would love to see more of your work!

Yarn or Fabric 01-01-2013 06:44 PM

Very nice! I'm really torn between that class, the quilting with templates or the quilting negative spaces one. I'm sure I'll eventually do all of them but now I'm leaning towards this one instead of the templates - those were my first two choices... Your piece looks wonderful :)

SharonAnne 01-01-2013 06:49 PM

Magnifique!!! I love it and I love the Craftsy classes also. I think I'll have to try this one!!

Wanabee Quiltin 01-01-2013 07:08 PM

This is beautiful, you are a master !

blahel 01-01-2013 07:21 PM

beautiful and I so enjoy seeing all your fmq pieces...maybe i too will get brave and do an online class..

If it helps you decide, Cindy Needham covers quite a few really cool background designs in this class. BTW, I'm interested in the Negative Spaces class too, but now I've got a BUNCH of new stuff to work on for awhile.

newestnana 01-01-2013 07:41 PM

Oh, your quilting is outstanding! I too took the course and got lots of good pointers. I'm currently working on a quilt that I had pieced fairly carefully and wanted truly beautiful quilting. Painful as it was, I followed Cindy's ESS recommendation (ditch every stinking seam) before starting the FMQ part. Even though my stitching was acceptable on my practice piece, when I was doing the actual design on the quilt I had lots of trouble. Couldn't make nice smooth lines, thread breakage (SOOOO frustrating), etc. I'm taking a break and plan to pick up the next parts tomorrow.

Maybe you want to do mine for me?

ladysuds 01-01-2013 08:31 PM

I love that..that is fm correct? That surely wasn't your first free motion correct ..how beautiful

busy fingers 01-01-2013 10:25 PM

Gold star for you - great work.

DOTTYMO 01-02-2013 12:15 AM

This is beautiful to see a project done from a class. I tend to get fed up listening to chit chat on videos. Must try to accomplish this standard .

nunnyJo 01-02-2013 04:27 AM

wow, is that nice

True; I took this class to learn more about how to design for the pieces I wanted to quilt. I've been practicing freemotion quilting (FMQ) for over 3 years now, and for the first several months it was very BAAAAAAD! (Our cat and our daughter's dog have several of those first attempts to sleep on!)

nabobw 01-02-2013 05:28 AM

Wow I think you know what you are doing. Beautiful

heather1949 01-02-2013 06:24 AM

Yep that's a real stunner, and great colour combination of cotton and material,

quiltstringz 01-02-2013 06:34 AM

Well your practicing has paid off. I can't seem to do that but know that I must make time for it if I want to move forward. Thanks for sharing

sandram 01-02-2013 06:45 AM

you did great!!! I just ordered the McTavishing book, anxiously waiting for it to come in.
