Fugly Orange Baby Quilt

2 Attachment(s)
This pattern was from a post on this board last fall. I made it but I think it's hideous and I don't know what to do with it. I make baby quilts for anyone in my office who is expecting, and this now in my stash of baby quilts that I make and keep on hand. When I find out that someone is pregnant, I get my spies to find out if they know the sex, and based on that, I select one from my stash and make a customized label for that person.

Anyway, this quilt was a big challenge. I followed the directions on the link (which you can find in the first sentence of this post), but I had a lot of difficulty getting the pieces to align properly in each block. It seemed that some of the individual pieces were off by 1/4 to 1/2" and there was no reason for it because I measured and re-measured. The blocks on the back are ones that would not fit in the front because they were too small to fit into the proper block size. As a result of this problem, the front of the quilt is not straight and when you look at it up close, you can see where the fabric is a bit skewed in places where I had to stretch it to align with the next piece. I quilted it using zig-zag SITD, thinking that zig-zagging would hide some of the imperfections, but it still looks crappy to me. :-(

Anyway, I think it's way too fugly to give to anyone. What do you think? Should I maybe give it to charity? It's all done and ready to go. There is a girl at my work who is pregnant now that a lot of people don't like. I give quilts to everyone in my branch (there's about 70 people) whether I like them or not, and so I will give one to this girl. I just think it would be mean to stick her with such an ugly creation. Thoughts?

I think you are being too hard on yourself. Find out if the girl likes these colors. If she does, I'm sure she would love to have this quilt.

valleyquiltermo 04-24-2012 05:22 PM

Looks modern to me,Maybe she likes modern?? I like it anyway.

barny 04-24-2012 05:29 PM

If you are thoughtful enough to give a quilt to someone no one likes, give her a perfect one. It will make her feel so good to know she is likeable. Give the one you don't like to charity. It must be awful to know that a lot of people don't like you. It may make her very likeable. PS. I like the quilt.

Homemother 04-24-2012 05:30 PM

I think this is a really cool quilt! It will probably fit someone's taste. If you don't feel right "gifting" it to someone, take it to work and put it on the back of your chair. Watch how many people walk by and admire it! Give it to the most enthusiastic admirer!!!

Jackie Spencer 04-24-2012 05:35 PM

If you don't feel good about giving it as a gift, or if you think one of the other people you made a quilt for. will look at this one as being inferior to others you have made, I would not give it to her.

Neesie 04-24-2012 05:38 PM

Orange isn't my favorite color but that is NOT an ugly quilt! I agree with valleyquiltermo; it looks very modern. If you aren't comfortable about giving it to a baby, donate it to a children's hospital and it'll become someone's pride and joy!

sahm4605 04-24-2012 05:45 PM

I agree it is not fugly just not my taste and if I was an orange lover and loved modern looking things then I would love this quilt. I agree that if the girl loves orange then go for it but if not then just maybe take it to work and see the reaction from people there will be one odd duck who will love it I bet. And I would definitely make a really really nice baby quilt for her in colors she loves or will be doing for the babies room. maybe this will help make her more likeable.

sharon b 04-24-2012 06:01 PM

Not my colors- but unless she knows the pattern and what it should look like- no one but you knows the "mistakes" - but you sound uncomfortable giving it away for a baby present , so like others suggested take it to work and see if someone likes it and gift it to them- and no one has to know that it is less than perfect  LOL

fxsts93kf 04-24-2012 06:13 PM

I love it! So bright and cheerful!

Lauriepark 04-24-2012 06:20 PM

I am new here as of today.... I think its a beautiful quilt! Some people do not like orange some love orange!
I think this girl would love it if she loves the color! good luck there! Laurie

TeresaS 04-24-2012 06:30 PM

I must be weird but I love it! Orange is the it color this year as well. Very pretty.

hperttula123 04-24-2012 06:33 PM

It's not ugly. I really like it. It's more modern and bright. :)

Helen S 04-24-2012 06:38 PM

I think it's cute...maybe add some yoyo flowers here and there, as if they're coming out of "vases" (the rectangular areas) in complementary colors, of course...maybe in different shades of pink if it's a girl? Maybe add little applique trains to the rectangles if it's a boy? (sure hope that gal at work doesn't read this forum! lol)

nls 04-24-2012 06:40 PM

Very pretty--bight and cheerful!

Dolphyngyrl 04-24-2012 06:56 PM

Its not ugly, just really bright, give it to someone whose favorite color is orange

Christine27 04-24-2012 07:01 PM

It is bright and cheerful. If you offered your coworker a choice of this one or another, she may choose this one since it looks so fun. If you let her choose at least you won't feel bad giving a gift you don't like.

paulettepoe 04-24-2012 07:03 PM

Great for an October baby.

sewgarden 04-24-2012 07:10 PM

i'm not an orange person but I like your quilt. Because you feel or know it has those imperfections give it to charity and give your pregnant workmate one that you feel happy about.

RkayD 04-24-2012 07:16 PM

I LOVE it! I made a red and orange one a few years ago and its a favorite of the house. =)

DebbE 04-24-2012 07:20 PM

I like your quilt, but since you feel so strongly about it, donate it -- someone will treasure it. Find out what colors the mama to be wants for baby's room, and make one that will knock her socks off, so she will feel liked and treasured like everyone else does. How sad that no one likes her...it must make it awfully hard for her to get up everyday and go to work having everyone treat her that way. I'd want to make HER a quilt, too, just to set an example for others.

katamingo 04-24-2012 07:35 PM

Not an orange fan myself but it loooks just fine, and remember babies Love bright and stimulating colors, Showed it to one of my co-workers and she really loved it. I just finished a purple and green mardi gras theme, not my faves either but came out great and my client loved it.. Personal Taste, good job

suebee 04-24-2012 07:42 PM

WOW, I think you are being waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too hard on your self. ORANGE is very hot this year. Dont give it away because you dont like it...give it to someone that will appreciate it.

ruthie 04-24-2012 07:48 PM

I would consult my conscience and do what it says. Personally I would be thrilled with any quilt that someone took the time to make and was kind enough to give to me.

rushdoggie 04-24-2012 08:05 PM

I think its bright and cheerful!

QuiltingCrazie 04-24-2012 08:18 PM

You can donate it to me.....lol I like it!! Reminds me of citrus!! I belong to a guild now here and they do babylove and Quilts of Valor. So if you decide to donate your more then welcome. I think it's great and cheerful!!

virtualbernie 04-24-2012 08:28 PM

I don't think it's fugly. I like both modern and traditional quilts. I hadn't seen your previous post so I thank you for showing it. I think I'll try it out! I think it's a beautiful quilt!

SheriR 04-24-2012 08:44 PM

I love it too! Infact I snapped a picture of it to show my daughter tomorrow. She's simply in LOVE with orange. We call her mrs.sherbert here lol and we just had a great 10.5" square ORANGE swap LuvtooQuilt hosted in mrs.sherberts honor. You'd never believe all the marvelous oranges we got! I promise someone will love your quilt and never see the imperfections. :D

MiaA 04-24-2012 09:21 PM

I absolutely LOVE this quilt, the yellow/orange/red tones are vibrant and will make the recipient of this gorgeous quilt very happy!

Thanks for your sensitive comments, DebbE. You were able to express just the way I feel! I agree wholeheartedly!

WOW! I think it is beautiful. I do love orange as it is my favorite color. This quilt is totally awesome. I don't see a thing wrong with it. I would be honored to have this quilt given to me.

scottishmist 04-24-2012 11:34 PM

That is a great quilt! It's a bit wonky, and its very bright. I love bright!!! BUT its not horrible by any means!! It would need to be given to someone who loved the colours, I liked the idea of putting it on your chair and seeing who admired it most. Give the girl no one liked a nice quilt, its better for your soul - of course if she loves modern orange give her this one!!!!!!

I like this quilt too....and what a great idea. As for the "unlikeable, pregnant girl" give her something you find pleasing/beautiful, that would be a good thing to do.

bloomingiris 04-25-2012 05:20 AM

I like it! Very Bright and cheery- you could always applique something on it to break it up- maybe a blue elephant or something like that, either way its very nice>

XYZ123 04-25-2012 05:30 AM

Your fugly is cute.

thenonnielady 04-25-2012 05:34 AM

I did this one in light and medium blues and presented it as a baby shower gift last week. I like your bright colors, good for bigger child....

DebraK 04-25-2012 05:40 AM

I really like it!

DebbE, you and many others have posted advice similar to this, and I agree with you that I probably should not give it to her. I have 2 more girl baby quilts completed: one purple and one pink - so I think I may give the orange one to charity as so many of you have suggested.

I also think that it would be terrible to not be liked at work, but some of it is self-induced on her part. Regardless, I'd rather have it where most everyone likes working with me. This is one of the reasons why I give a quilt to anyone in my branch: because I am their manager and I don't want it to look like I am picking favourites , and also because I love to quilt.

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice!

quilter68 04-25-2012 06:08 AM

I had to log-in to tell you that I love it! I would be warm under this quilt just because of the colors.
